Engine Oil Filter Removal.

Apparently since 2009? the 1.4 D4D Yaris engine has been fitted with a "paper" filter element housed under a removable black plastic cover. The removal of the cover requires a tool similar to that used to unscrew the older canister type filter.

To save me crawling under the car to measure! Does anyone know the size i.e. number of flutes and distance across flats? The canister tool is 14 flutes and 63mm but the plastic cover looks larger which could also be a bit of an illusion without measuring correctly.

I intend to carry out a 6 months oil and filter change myself.

I asked Parts King if he could obtain one but not yet had a response.

I would wager that it is 64mm 14 flats as used by toyota in loads of vehicles, including lexus for canister filters, and insert filter covers.

There is a tool in the usa made by assenmacher specialist tools cat number TOYAST640 and available on Amazon usa

http://www.amazon.com/Assenmacher-AST-Toyota-Filter-09228-06501/dp/B0015PK3AG

The perfect tool, check out the Amazon buyers reviews..They tell the story for you corolla, camry, lexus the lot more models than you can shake a stick at...Reviews all good.Reasonable price .. but this product is very difficult to obtain in europe and that is when i started exploring a little.

My vehicle is 1.0 12v petrol,1kr-fe (same as aygo) and has a 90915-yzzj1 canister filter,as do many toyota vehicles nowerdays.

If you order a product from laser tools (cat no 4232) 64mm/14 flats, you will get a 65mm/14 flats...Laser tools, and all their resellers have a description error...You will not get 64/14 if you order this item.

Confused dot com ?...so was I !

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Laser-4232-Filter-Wrench-Flutes/dp/B0012M9K2E

The toyota covers and canisters seem to be 64mm x 14, or 64 "and a bit" (64.5mm) x 14

A word of warning..65mm/14 Laser 4232 wrench roughly fits on my toyota 90915-YZZJ1 filter but the laser is steel plate construction, relies on spot welds and is a poor mans alternative over aluminium.

Also the 3/8 sq drive hole makes your attached ratchet when fitted scrape the top of the canister filter (the weakest part) or insert filter cover if you are not careful.

This is especially true if a quick release type press button 3/8 ratchet is used on its own as the release button will engage the socket release pin upwards and quite possibly into the filter casing.

This model has to be used with the ratchet or extension accessory half inserted and half out for best results...not perfect by any means.

If your insert cover is plastic, I would not risk anything that does not fit exactly.

I have souced an alternative to the assenmacher from:

mann-hummel filters europe.

T: 01902-384000.

It is from their LS range of filter wrenches, the LS6/1.

1 piece All Aluminium construction, 64mm 14 flats.

This would not cause the problem of damaging the filter as there is no square hole, it is socket/hex driven.

It is on its way from germany to my local motor factor cost less than a fiver inc vat..yes you read right £5.. and i hope to try it as soon as it arrives...it may just be the answer.

Mann-Hummel will have a distributor motor factor reseller near you.

filtspanner.jpg

Incidentally , the LS7 spanner in this series may help with yaris and aygo 1.4 diesels from 1/2006 to 1/ 2009 which had a 76mm/14 canister filter.

Mann-Hummel do not do a great job of marketing their LS range wrenches, information is not very good, even on the internet. Best ring them if you need additional info.

Hope the above helps you mrpj !

Excellent information toyomaz, thank you. Yes, I've seen the Fuchs Titan also this ACEA C2 spec. Comma on eBay. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/COMMA-OIL-PRO-TECH-5W-30-FULLY-SYNTHETIC-5LITRE_W0QQitemZ220671581545QQcategoryZ9895QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp5197.m7QQ_trkparmsZalgo%3DLVI%26itu%3DUCI%26otn%3D5%26po%3DLVI%26ps%3D63%26clkid%3D7227497507683570267

The tool I already have isn't 63mm but 73mm, silly me! That does fit the canister filter. So it could be the plastic cover requirement is smaller at 64mm, hence the "illusion" remark.

  • 1 year later...

I have a Laser oil filter wrench(Laser 4880) but it's not that one, its 64.5mm x 14 flutes which is a perfect fit for Yaris (and other models) made from cast alloy also. Can be found here: http://www.toolbox.c...CFQQMtAodvnCwjg

NB

Not suitable for the Diesel Yaris or engines fitted with paper filters.

There's an Assenmacher cast alumnium tool available from Amazon in the U.S. which is suitable. My original post refers to the later paper filters. I suspect the tool linked is only suitable for canister filter removal. Discussed here http://www.toyotaownersclub.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=135074
