hi folks

my rav4 has now covered 82'000 miles,clutch bites fine....a slight judder first thing in morning when pulling away out of my driveway,but told slightly more rev's are needed to stop this.

with engine running i can put handbrake on firmly on my drive and select 1st gear/reverse gear ,let out clutch,vehicle tries to pull forward/backward with good strength,pulling back of rav down when trying to go forward,and front of rav down when trying to reverse.

can anyone tell me when clutch would need replacing.

incidently,when i first bought rav,almost 4 years ago now with 32'000 on the clock,im sure i was told by dealership service manager clutch had recently been replaced as it juddered.

its just that its on my mind now with my extended g/tee expiring in oct,and concerned about possible costs if i need one in next year or so

I personally would never change a clutch unless there was a specific reason for it.

Also, more revs might cause rapid wear and hot RAV clutches are prone to smell. I find that the revs as low at the time of biting gives the best result so just experiment a bit.

there is a test that can be done to assess whether the clutch is to change, but in English I can not explain.I' m sorry :-(

leave it alone until you hear the dolcite tones of the DMF starting to fail,clutches dont seem to fail on the RAV's its the flywheel that gives up the ghost

since you mention the dreaded DMF,for about the last 8 months now,maybe even longer,i have noticed a SLIGHT rat,tat,tat,tat....tat,tat,tat noise from front of vehicle when engine is running,sitting in queues at standstill etc.

often wondered recently after all ive heard about DMF on here ,if its starting to fail,but as i say clutch bites ok and pulls strongly at moment,does feel a little 'different' if im 'controlling' it when im green laneing.

do these DMF's fail suddenly or gradually?

yep,i do prefer to keep revs low as poss on cold starts,and problem is only on very first pull away,after that its fine

crumbs...good weather in the peaks eh.....,last time we had rain here was about 3 weeks ago.....1 day of it,farmers are irrigating everywhere here,...the dry is good for the harvest though,but vandals near 'jaywick' keep torching the combines..B*****dS.

so yes we have yellow dust everywhere at the mo,freshly blown off the fields!!!!!!...nice,oh and plenty of harvest spiders getting in through our windows..

the DMF's fail sort of gradually,they start with a rattle and maybe a little surging on releasement of the clutch pedal then they slowly get worse but you sort of get used to the noise,then you nstart to feel it pulsating through the pedal then they make a horrendous noise like your gearbox is gonna fall out,dunno what happens after that cos most people have already gone to a garage to see what the noise is but it sounds like you have the first stages of DMF failure,join the club
