Firstly I'll apologise in advance but I've at last put down a deposit on a 2005 XT5 5 door petrol subject to a satisfactory vehicle inspection as the car is 250 miles away, so I'm going to have loads of questions to ask over the coming weeks. Here are the first 2:

With my current Ford I have 2 everday black keys and one red 'master' key which I understand is needed for certian re-programming jobs. How many keys should I get with the RAV and are they all the same or do I need to make sure that I get a 'master' key again?

The seller doesn't appear to have the owners manual. Is there anywhere I can download one from?
No doubt I'll be back with more questions as and when they crop up as at the moment it's all I can think of.
Thanking everyone in advance.

hi catweazle

firstly welcome to the club!

your keys should....i believe consist of two remote lock/unlock keys and again one master key with no buttons at all,the plain one with no buttons normally has a small 'brass' tag attched to it,with a code number stamped into it.

as for owners manual,im not sure but one of the other members should be along shortly to answer that one for you, possible anchorman, hemi, davrav.

maybe even 'parts-king' ('kingo') who is a toyota parts manager at a dealership.

Thanks Rambler

I'll check to make sure that I get all the keys and hope that someone on the forum can point me in the direction of a owners manual/handbook.

Hi CW

Do you want a manual or a handbook?

Handbooks keep popping up on ebay and the best manual is the Toyota online manual which is about £3 on your credit card and is all in pdf format!

Hi Anchorman
I'm not sure what the correct name is but I'm referring to the instruction book that comes with the car telling you what all the knobs and switches do, how to operate the radio, etc, etc. I'm not after a service manual or anything like that.
Thanks

That's a hand book. There are some on ebay but they look Australian to me so I wouldn't bother because they will be 2.4 petrols with auto gearbox etc.

Either wait till one pops up or try these;

You should soon get sorted.

Thanks Anchorman.
Sorry for the deluge of questions but I'm still in panic mode as I've never spent this much on a car before and am already having second thoughts even though I desperately want a RAV and have been looking for ages now.
anchorman
No problem and don't forget there are 1000's out there so don't rush and find one you are confident about. We will still be here when you get one

Thanks for the time and reassurance.

I have a 53 plate diesel Rav....should I have three keys including a master? I only have the two with the remote switches on them.

hi lomond lad

i think i am right in saying that if you dont have that third 'plain' key with the 'code' tag attached, you may have problems ordering spare keys in the future if you need them.

as the code matches the ravs i.d for central locking reception, when you press those magic buttons.
anchorman
You should have 2 keys with remote buttons and one plain grey key with key code No's. on a little metal plate. Sometimes you can find that tucked in one of the wallets inside the hand book folder.

Bah...just my luck! I came on the forum to look for info on keys and it's just got worse. One of my key fobs plastic covers is burst and cracked and needs replaced. Do Toyota supply the plastic covers that the key inserts? It all works just now but won't for much longer. I'm using my only other spare now.

Somebody got around this recently. I think they bought the blanks off ebay and had it cut then just swapped the innards.

Just do a quick search........

Hey anchorman....I would just like to thank you for pointing me in the direction of Ebay.

One blank key with empty plastic shroud for £10, postage £2 and the local ironmonger to copy and cut the key from the original £2 = £14 in total. Quote from Mr Toyota garage was £145 plus VAT for a new key.

You saved me in the region of £160 :yahoo:

In a word - Yes. And don't let them 'fob' you off ;)

Welcome to the club
anchorman
You should have 2 remote fob keys and one sub key. You should also have a little metal tag with the key code and this allows you to order a key if the others become lost. Sometimes owners put it in the wallet inside the handbook folder as it is really supposed to be kept away from the keys;

Ive found the key but it hasnt got a tag with a code just a key ring from dealer
anchorman
Have you had a good look in all the pockets of the folder? Some of the dealers put them in there.

hi folks

here's mine....the white arrow shows grey standard key with stamped 'coded' tag, bearing in mind my rav is a '4.2' model

"Oops!"

hope this helps

rambler
Catweazle
Just in the process of buying a 4.2 RAV which doesn't have the grey non-remote key. The dealer said that I don't need this and a trip to my local Toyota dealer confirmed this as they will order and code further keys as long as I can produce one of the remote keys, the V5 document and my registration form. Apparently, the grey key is of little use these days.
anchorman
I don't think I'd be too concerned. I've never used mine.
