Hi,

I'm looking for any advice on what I should do with my avensis's engine. Recently the engine died on me. After the mechanic stripped it out he said a bit had broken off the turbo, gone into the pistons and been thown against the head cracking it open, spilling out the coolant and seizing the engine.

He's found a replacement head and turbo but I'm not sure about the bottom half of the engine. Could the impact of the piece of the turbo between the piston and head damaged the crankshaft? Or anything else down there? The mechanic said there is a mark on one of the pistons.

Any help is much appreciated.

The unit where the piston is marked should be stripped down as there could be damage to the piston,piston rod, bottom end bearing, main bearing or even the crank shaft. Rebuilding the engine with a new head without checking this unit could be a waste of money in the long run. Thats my opinion anyway

Diesel cylinder heads are made to a pretty strong design considering the pressures they have to take. If the ingress of parts of the turbo tubine have caused it to crack I would strongly suspect further damage elsewhere in the areas already mentioned by Kenny. I have in my experience come across similar situations whereby the crankcase has also undergone severe stress.
My personal opinion would be to opt for another engine as the risks of it going belly-up after a re-build would be too great or cost effective.

As a matter of interest Thomas had you any warning signs such as turbo whine, burning oil or signs of oil in the air inlet manifold system. What age is the car and does it have an intercooler fitted??
