Full Version: Tuning Up A T Sport

Hi there,

Okay - I love the T sport, and noone can deny its fast when you get up in the lift. Unfortunatley for me, i've sat in an Evo 8 FQ330 and know what it feels like to be pummelled into the chair with every gear change.

So what can I do? Anyone got any suggestions for getting more BHP and low end power and accelleration out of the T Sport? Not very mechanicaly minded but prices and options would be appreciated... I know the first step will probably be new air intake and exhaust but i'm thinking about generating a bit more power than that.

Thought appreciated folks!

Cheers thumbsup.gif

Alright mate! Welcome to the club firsly

Induction Kit and exhaust will prolly see you past 200bhp. Piper Race cams would give you about another 10-15bhp and some much needed torque. (reportedly)

Turbo/supercharger would be the next step, depends on budget mate,

Cheers for the reply and thanks for the welcome...

My car before this was a 1L Hyundai Getz so I know where your coming from with the Yaris.

Lets say i wanted to go to town and get the supercharger/turbo fitted. Presumably i'd need the exhuast and intake sorted as well. Any idea of a ball park cost for this?

As I said before the top ends great but I'm more into accellaration than top speed....
Chyownster
Super charger looking at £3k+ any more than that mate. REally depends, not looking into it myself. Induction kit. £200-250? Decent exhaust, well its a minefield from like £300-800.

But before u got for ur power hike, get some suspension and brakes sorted out mate!

Hello, as a newbe I would ask if its a waste of time to chip the T sport, I have heard a lot of pros and cons.

Any tips from you older members? Thanks.

Firstly Welcome to TOC thumbsup.gif

The Dastek Unichip seems to be quite popular, but i dont own a TS so im unsure how it reacts to it, what cons have you heard?? I cant see how it would do any harm once setup correctly huh.gif

Thanks for the welcome! I'll look into it.

On several forums they lean more towards exhaust and intake rather than chips, the cons were more the related costs for for what might be a slight gain in performance.

If your looking into Exhaust/Air Intake, i'd have those fitted before you have the the engine chipped, that way once you have it chipped it be mapped exactly right for how the engine is running thumbsup.gif

P/X your celica for an EVO? shutup.gif
A 1.8 N/A is never going to compete with a 2L turbo. Messing with intakes/exhausts/chips won't make a noticable difference. The only (possible) worthwhile thing would be a decat - but don't expect more than 5 hp.

The TS is not really suitable for forced induction either - if you want to go down that route, you're probably better off starting with a 140.

It might be best to just accept that the 190 is a very highly tuned engine straight from the factory, and there's not much room for improvement.

Hi,

As I posted before:let the engine as it is!The clue of the TS is not its engine BUT IT IS WITH ITS TRANSMITION KIT!!!!!!!

For huge increase in acceleration in every gear from 1.800-8.200 rot/min you MUST make the following changes:
-new clutch(TRD,JUN)
-new fly wheel(TRD,JUN)
-new coilovers(TEIN,KONY,etc)
-new air filter(TRD-USA)

and the best one FINAL GEAR SET from C-ONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

After ALL above modf. your car will be a real beast!

If you are looking for A RACE CAR add up IT THE WRC short gear from C-ONE!

The others (induction, exhaust etc) are common and wouldn't change dramaticaly the car's behaviour or its performance!
Mircea

Sorry!I have forgotten to mention that my car is a Corolla TS!

Anyway a LSD from TRD-Japan is welcome!

I've seen a dyno run of a weapon r CAI and header and it gave the car about an extra 10-15hp...if i remember correctly

If you want the "pinned to the seat" feeling you need forced induction, or about 5 litres laugh.gif

Torque, is the real thing you can feel and any amount of bhp a 1.8 can make wont give you this feeling in quite the same way. Forced induction really builds a lot of torque, that a N/A car can't make. Mind you, they are less reliable, and the engine is pretty stressed huh and they are pretty lame when off-boost, due to the engine running low-compression internals and the like.

I'm not slagging off the Celica at all, having had a ride in a VVTL-i one I absolutely loved it (damn they sound SO good!!)

Depends what your after though, I've been round a track (well, airfield / cones layout) in a DC2 Integra - it was thoroughly underwhelming, on acceleration. munched through the gears, and got really fast but you couldn't really feel it.. awsome cornering and braking though, and it was just as fast in terms of lap-times as a 300bhp 200SX I also went round in, but the 200SX felt so much faster due to the huge torque, which gave it the brutal-acceleration feeling that is so often sought after.
Chyownster
the celica has no torque, it needs "whiding" up

True.

However, forced air does help - eg. Supercharger! Look at the Corolla T-sport compressor (tte fitted). They have stuck a relatively small charger onto the corolla which has transformed the low-end torque figures for the car and taken off 1 and 1/2 seconds 0-60. You can get bigger chargers for the celica aftermarket. You are looking at 4K+ to fit though. Bear in mind that you will need to sort your clutch and transmission out as well.

Chyownster
yeah but its 4k as you say, and the rest. Seems like a big investment for, well not small gains, but gains that can be done by getting a faster car
Ryan1985
A guy I know around here has fitted a Blitz Supercharger to his 190 and it's one of the fastest FWD cars in Scotland! He's running around 250bhp I think! thumbsup.gif

Here is his graph and figures:

IPB Image

236 bhp + 177 ft/lbs torque. Not that great for such a big outlay!

Is this a standard t sport as it looks rapid? Linky!

That aint standard lol

Check out the comments on it, he says its running an Apexi Power FC as well as some other goodies biggrin.gif

186whp apparantly thumbsup.gif

Ryan1985
And that test will be performed on a rolling road probably! thumbsup.gif
Chyownster
thats a pretty rapid Celica
snellgrove
biggrin.gif Yeah!

I didn't know they could go all the way to 8500 - I thought the limiter cut in a bit before that.

awsome stuff, I like the 7th Gen silly-car all the more now wink.gif

Has anyone used the Apexi Power FC what doe sit actually do, is it easy to set up? Any idea what else was on that?

as mentioned above as a 1.8 n/a car, it's terrific.
if you compare to an evo, think of the disadvantages of higher maintenace, insurance, running, mpg etc.
