I have a 2003 RAV4 VX petrol. I took it for its first MOT yesterday and was very disappointed to be told that the brake discs and pads needed replacing. I have asked the dealer why the discs are apparently worn out when the pads are only 85% worn. The self proclaimed 'expert' on the service desk tells me that this is standard! I have never had to replace discs at this kind of mileage before on any other car, and certainly not before the pads!! Can anyone tell me whether they have had a similar experience please? There is more to the story but I won't bore you with too much detail!
Thanks

I've only ever heard of three reasons for having disks replaced:
The pads have worn so much the remains have dug into the disks,
The brakes have over heated causing the disks to worp or
the brakes have been on too long (vehicle left unused for a long period ot time i.e months).
It is not "normal" to replace disks at the same time as the pads. I'd take it some where else and get a second opinion!

Just had the front Pads and Disks changed on my D4D (52 plate) they had done 49k miles. Kwik Fit mechanic showed me pads and they were completly worn down...... and before I had them changed I had the grinding sound.... so they needed doing....
Just had 50k service and back pads are only showing 50% worn......
Yours sound like they need changing too soon.... I wont tell you the price MT T was going to charge me for the fronts to be changed..... Kwik Fit have a free brake test and diog test......

Thanks all for your advice. Took the car for another MOT to an independent garage - sailed straight through not even a headlamp out of alignment! Will not be taking mine back to Toyota apart from the free replacement of parts which Head office have told me they will authorise. (Car is one day out of warranty). Disappointing really as they have always appeared to give great service - now I know better!!!
