Newby to this chat site with the following problem with our series I RAV4. Someone in a large van or similar probably hit it and b@ggered off and it is deformed mainly where the nudge bar was pressed into it. I now have a replacement bumper but can't find anyone selling a workshop manual so I can see how to remove the old one and whether there are additional clips that may need replacing.

Does anyone know of a suitable manual to help me do this or have removed the bumper assembly themselves and can give some advice.

PS. when I got the replacement bumper it ends up being a copy but apparently these are mean't to be indistinguisable from the hideously expensive genuine moulds. Hopefully this won't be an issue.

I bought a manual from a guy on ebay that was selling the USA version of the Haynes manual. It dates from 1996 which is when the RAV started being in sold in USA but it has done well for my '94 model. I've not come across any great differences as such and it has helped me a lot. Pity the garage that stuck a replacement engine into the RAV 2 years ago didn't look at the manual cos they managed to take it out the top - the engine is meant to be dropped through the bottom !!

I've not worked on the front bumper - if you don't get anywhere with the manual, I'll take a look at mine and post the instructions.

In looking at the manual, it warns on the airbags needing to be disabled...
"Disconnect the -ve battery terminal then the +ve and wait 2 minutes. (Time for a cuppa or quick swig of whisky..)
Remove the splash shields below the vehicle.
detach the screws securing the top, bottom, and sides of the bumper cover. Pull the cover out slightly and disconnect the light connectors. From the illustration i have it looks as if there are 6 bolts underneath; then 2 on each bumper stay then another 8 on the upper reinforcement/ bumper mounting.
There may be tabs securing the ends of the headlight filler panel which need to be depressed

Hope this helps; that you don't get too frustrated undoing old bolts; avoid becoming too drunk; and don't break anything else in the process....
mad Scotsman
