All this talk of 8 track cassettes and Ford Granada's got me laughing, so I thought it might be nice to take a trip down memory lane remembering our parents old cars from when we were kids.
Mine are soooooooooooo embarrasing, I can remember the 1st one to have a radio/cassette in it - talk about unbridled luxury!!
Back then, leather and aircon was for Rolls Royces only!!!

From memory the cars were:
Austin 1100
Chrysler 180 (1st car I ever travelled at an indicated 100mph in!!)
Renault 5 (with gearstick in the dash)
Morris Marina 1300 (1st tape player)
Volvo 340 DL (with the one speed autobox and the car I used to nick when they were out so I could teach myself to drive, especially remember taking it to Epping Forest one morning when it had snowed and powersliding it all over the place - it was rear wheel drive!!!) :nono: :nono: :nono:

There is a thread of bad cars all through my Dad's life so far - He's got a Nedflander at the moment!! :(

Anyone else care to share!!!
dave.m
This is easy, mine did not drive

When I can remember the 30 odd cars I have had, I will put them on here (maybe minus a couple of
french ones or Chatman might get revenge :D )

Paul, re the nedflanders, I think i've still got bits in my garage, well roofbars anyway, could not make them
fit the rav. May have to dump !

Dave. ;)

From what I can remember, between both my parents ...

Fiat 127
Rover 2600
Austin/Rover Metro/100 (Mum had 3 or 4 of these in a row)
Vauxhall Cavalier
Renault 25
Merc 190E
Merc 200E

There are others, but can't remember atm. They currently share 1 car, not they're retired, and my Dad is only in the country for about 2 months a year. They're on their 3rd Renault Clio, since they stopped making the metro/100.
cfc1
I'll try and remember them..

Morris cambridge or oxford (1st I can recall)
Vauxhall Viva (can remember my parents buying this.. showroom is now WH Smiths l:lol:)
Vauxhall Victor
Ford Cortina MK3 Ghia
Lada Riva (less said the better.. soon got rid to make room for....)
Fiat Coupe 850 sport (cracking little rear engined car)

Just remembered, my day also had a Ford Capri. Dunno which version, but not the 2.8, unfortunately.
yazburner
cars my parent(s) have owned.....

a ford granada 2.9 beast of a thing!
one of the square shaped rover 200s, in white
our first toyota, a carina E 2.0, light blue, loved that car.

and now me and my mom share a yaris GS :)

and we intend on sticking with toyota for the forseeable future, next car, yaris T sport, and a corrolla for the mum :P

Come on Yaz, if you want something small and fast get a 3 door Rav ! The "GTI" of 4X4's
as quoted by What Car. We may even let you join the saddo b&*stards club on this thread.

as much as id love to join the club, ive yet to find a wife to hide my "dirty little secret" from.

plus im a 19 year old motorsport student...

I'm not going to look too cool pulling up to a local cruise in a RAV4 with green neons, wolfrace wheels and a universal jap burnt-tip exhaust poking out the rear am i? I dont want all the corsa and saxo boys laughing at me in thier "sick" cars.

Id get a RAV4 for my mom, but shes one of those "why do people need :censor: 4x4" kinda people.

That makes me feel old.

I've had two of the cars on your list - well almost - an MG 1300GT and a Morris Ital 1.7

Dad had a variety of Fords, switched to Vauxhall, and then back to Ford, the latter including both a Mk1 and a Mk2 Escort, both of which were very cool. I wish we still had those.

He finally saw the light and started buying Toyotas about 20 years ago, so now he has a Rolla and a Carina. And a Mini for some reason.

A 3 doorRAV wi a 3SGTE turbo engine fitted is ***** hot so my garage says. So much so, he won't give me the bleeding thing back til he's done all the rest of the mods! GGGrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

My old man who's 88 and still driving a Fiat punto had an Austin Devon as a first car. From that I think he graduated to a Humber hawk which is why bought an old one (Sad).
After that one resorted to rust dust, he had a Triumph Herald 4 door which got wrote off in an altercation with a gate post.
Since then he's had a variety of cars including the Austin Princess 2200 HLS. Comfy car and crap engine. The best I remember was a 1966 Humber sceptre - 1725cc engine that could outperform most saloons of the time with a bit of tinkering on the carb - better if you went to twin 45 DCOEs - thems was the days!
Latterly he stuck at small cars like the Punto and Clio altho had a Kia Pride for quite some years.

Me? First was a Morris 1000 ex Telecom van. Simple as hell and easy to work on as it worked by rubber bands. Absolutely brilliant going round corners cos you just went up the banking and the suspension took it. When that succumbed to rust got a convertible Triumph Herald which did us proud for a few years. It blew a head gasket when on holiday and I was able to strip down and rebuild the head in just a few hours on an estate in Numeaton - had to cos the car would have got wrecked !! Had a Triumph GT6 which was a scary car - all 6 cyl engine and not much else. At BT drove the old Commer van which you could get onto 2 wheels on corners at 28mph.
Then went through vauxhall Victor Mk2 - crap. Morris Marina estate - nice looking but crap. Then got into company cars with a brand new Talbot Horizon!!
After a few other cars, got given new 2L Sierras which I ran into the ground every 18 months (massive mileage). Then Granada - comfy but slow. After that had a Ford galaxy which needed a petrol tank trailer.
The Toyota Previa was the best vehicle I've driven up to now - cruise comfy at above 100 with good accelaration and cornering stability. Twas automatic and a dream to drive - rear wheel drive. I didn't like the new front wheel drive when it came out.

Now looking forward to the RAV in uprated form; and next project to do up the Humber Hawk. The XJS is still sitting waiting its turn....

Hi
I learnt to drive in an old black ( only colour made ) Ford Popular .Myself and three mates bought it for a £5 when we were 15/16 years old . A local farmer let us use his private mile long dirt track to drive it on taking turns to drive and buy a gallon of petrol in a can every evening . From what I can remember it always overheated and eventually it was crashed into a wall and then our parents found out.
At 17 used my dad's Austin 1100 to pass my test , I think he had a Wolsley before that.

My first car was an Austin Maxi 1750 , great engine but a rust bucket but plenty of room in the back ;) ! Then a Hillman Avenger followed by three Vauxhall Cavaliers a 1600 , a 2000 CD (poor car ECU problems sold after 1 year ) and an SRi (good car lasted 7 years ) .Another Vauxhall and a Vectra 2000 GLS ,another 7 years out of this one .Then the RAV for the last two years .

Regards
Llith

Before I was born, my Dad always had motorbikes. But following my arrival, had to get something to transport me around in - so bought an Austin Allegro in a awful light brown colour. Following that came a Nissan Bluebird, but that was soon sold again due to a dodgy engine (head gaskets kept blowing). Next was a Vauxhall Cavalier, not too bad actually which ended up being parked up the side of the house when the next car came along; a Peugeot 405 GTi. And then another one.

I'm actually quite pleased with my Dad's current choice of car - a MG ZT-T 190... :)
Fujisan
This is great, well done Paul

Before I came along, my Dad had a Frogeye Sprite. I remember him telling me the story of a minor shunt in it and him sitting in the drivers seat watching all the bodywork cracking and crazing around him!

Now the ones that I can remember.

Hillman Imp Californian, green - only just remember that one.
Vauxhall VX4/90, light blue - vinyl seats, lovely on a hot summers day, leave half your skin in the car.
Wolseley Six (Auto), white - couldn't pull the skin of a rice pudding!
Ford Granada Mk1 (Auto), red with black vinyl roof - bought from my Uncle, loved that car!
Peugeot 305 diesel, cream - I wanted my Dad to get the bigger 505. I the end that car must have done a million miles....as a taxi. Remember push starting it every night for a fortnight before my Dad could afford a new alternator...hard work!

And then there were my cars.......but that's another story! :D
chatman
Well the one's I care to remember (well I am young anyway   ) so cant remember them all

x2 Vauxhall Victa's one green and one red..the latter one emptied its radiator contents on the north circular and stranded us for hours...me and my sisters thought it was great fun

Nissan Sunny that had a great leaking sun roof and boy did that rust.....

Vauxhall Astra Sport....Bright Red and alloy wheels and spoilers....My dad went up in my school boy books.....then it got nicked and police found it up a tree....

Ford Escort Ghia, nice plush velour seats and Air Con for the first time....

Currently own now a 5 year old Peugeot 307 Automatic....nice car but I told them to go for a Honda Civic...did they listen :( :(

Parts-King
The first I remember was:

Ford 5cwt Van or was it 7cwt??? (like an escort van only older.....lol) It was a summat hundred weight anyway.
BMC J4 Van (Diesel).....The pig broke down daily
My dad seemed to like his vans...............
Mk1 Cortina in a deep purple colour!
Mk2 Cortina in Green
HC Viva in white..............with........drum roll...........A Black Vinyl roof!!! Oh yes we had style in them there days

I remember my dad "Hired" an Austin Maxi 1750 (I even remember it was Harvest Gold in colour) it was the first car I ever wore a seatbelt in....those were the days

I believe cars have heaters in them these days??? (summat me dad would say now he's 83)

A Fiat 126 wrapped around lamp-post - what ??? You showing off that you had a stretched version long enough to go around a lamp-post??!!

Had a Montego at one point when working for BT - great on the straight but had problems if the car had to go round corners.....
I'd a Peugeot 205 - great car but traded it in for a new Citroen BX Estate - nice car. So nice it got stolen when 6 months old and driven around a field, over boulders, and through trees. Unfortunately Arnold Clark made one of the worst repair jobs in his life and I never saw the BX again as I sold it to Arnold whilst it was in '000s of bits on his workshop floor. I think it was the first diesel engine he'd encountered.
I'll need to remember wot company cars I had now....
The old man also had a Hillman Avenger - rust red- and a blue Sunbeam Rapier (old style from the 60s) with the 1600 engine.

My Dads car list ( bless him)

Simca Van ( remember them)

The wife will surely know what website I'm on now!!!
There's been some fantastic skeletons coming out of closets...............
Maxi's and All-agro's galore!!! :driving:
Dave, you must have kept Ford in business back in your Cortina years!!!
Chatman, Austin Montego
Can't wait for Anchorman to return, God only knows what delights will be in store from him!!!!

My own car list (clearly played under a joker as well) is as follows:
Mk1 VW Golf GTi
Peugeot 205 GTi 1.6 (wanted a 1.9 but couldn't get insured)
Renault Clio 16v
Renault Clio Williams I
Ford Mondeo ST24 (had two kids now)
Audi A4 2.4 SE (fell in love with all the leather and the red dials - handled like a bar of soap)
MK4 VW Golf GTi (needed a boot to put dog in)
4.2 Rav4 3 dr NRG (wife wanted a 4x4 I wanted something sporty, guess who won this argument)
4.2 Rav4 5 dr XT-R (the toyota bug has bitten)
4.3 Rav4 T180
(MKII Audi TT on order.................)

So there you go!!!!

Hi Paul, old Fords eh, what can you say love them to bits. Every time I see an old 1600E or 2000E
I still go "wow". Still cool, look at life on mars, all be it if you were a cortina fan you knew that was
GXL and not an E as the E's never came out till later (pardon the pun). Is this nostalgia or am I being
sad again

Anyway you dont kid us for 1 minute mate, bloody Mk1 GTI my a&*e  what about the ones
before the golf ?

Remember Dave, I'm only a wee young thing!! :baby:
Age 18 (in 1986) that was my 1st car!!!!
I forgot to mention, it too saw a bit of action with a lamp post on one occasion - but it wasn't my fault honest!!! :P
I unofficially learned to drive in my Dads Vovlo 345, then did my lessons in a Micra! B)

And as for Life on Mars - TOP QUALITY

I'll take it that its a fair representation of the 70's Dave :afro: , only I'm too young to remember!!!!!

Right after a word with my Therapist, here goes:

Allegro 1.3 White - Drank oil by the bucket. Also a puncture magnet, ended up carrying 2 spares. Rolled everywhere like a drunken sailor on a stromy sea. Sold to an old guy who gave it the complete inspection, when he pulled the dipstick out it was as dry as a desert, he squinted at it and declared that was fine! I ran to the bank with the money!
Mk 2 Capri 1.6 GL Red, Black Vinyl roof - Beautiful car all washed and polished. Unfortunately it liked standing still as well. At first a pig to start cold, new plugs, leads, dizzy and coil sorted that. And them it became a pig to start hot, new carb sorted that. I was on first name terms with the AA by this time. Handling on the orginal Firestones in the dry was tail happy, in the wet murderous! Goodyears tamed that. Met a swift and violent end when a low flying Rover 214 knock the whole back axle six inches sideways!
Mk 1 Fiesta 1.1 L White - All I could afford after the Capri was shovelled off the road. Plucky little solider that refused to die. Thrashed it everywhere. People could hear it at max revs miles away. Had a compression test done on it and the best cyl was only 17%, use to say it was trying to become a 1.3! Had to unplug the crackcase breather from the air filter and feed it under the car because the carb didn't like sucking on oil fumes, only to plumb it in again at MOT time.
Sold the car to my brother, who a couple of years later sold it on and I would still see it driving around town after that!
Mk 2 XR2 1.6 Red - Loved that car. Never any trouble but sold it in less than a year because it felt underpowered. Didn't help that my mate had a fuel inj'd Astra GTE.
Series 2 Escort RS Turbo 1.6 Black - Got me into some trouble that car. It nearly sucked my mate out of the rear seat when I was doing 125 with the sunroof open! Scared the life out of family and friends but I loved it. Munched it way though tyres and front brake disc's. Disc's would last less than 20K and a good front set of sticky Yokohama's would be shot in under 7K. Still the Recaro's in that car are the best car seats I've ever had. It only let me down once when the alternator died just outside the car park of a U2 concert in Leeds!
Puma 1.7 Black - Where the RS was raw power the Puma was finesse. Couldn't match the RS in a straight line but in the twisty bits nothing could catch it. But again after a few years the underpowered feeling got me again and the fact that water was filling the drivers footwell. So p/ex'd after a few weeks of dry weather!
330 Ci Silver - Still my favourite! Relaxed and comfortable when you wanted it to be, blow the doors off anything when you gave it the message. Miss that car, lot's.
X3 3.0 auto Blue - Think ex-press car, it was fulled loaded with every toy, Sat-nav, TV, the lot. I saved £14K on list when I got it six months old. For a big heavy truck it could move fast and handle well but not for long. Reset the trip comp, give it the beans and watch the mpg dancing in single figures. Even driving like a nun, 21-22mpg was the best I could get. It just became to expensive to run, with a raft of bills on the horizon (tax, servicing etc) it had to go.
RAV XT4 2.2 D4D Silver - And the story continues, so far so good. Does just like it says on the tin and more. Very happy.

Reading through this string and I remembered that I bought an Austin A35 saloon. Cheap and without looking too closely. Mechanically almost ok but the floor was becoming detached from the car, as was the handbrake lever.
Total laugh    - I drove it 16 miles along the M8, doing no more than 30mph, to a friendly MOT garage, to be told that it was needing welded (kinda knew that) and that only 1 brake worked :shutit: , and it wasn't the handbrake. It got moved to a guy on the south side of glasgow (what a character) who was able to do amazing things to renovate cars. Cos the car looked ok, it got used for a BBC TV production. However, it wasn't economic to repair so I never saw it again.

Chatman,
I started at the bottom, the very depths of the bottom, in fact the black region, beyond the very depths of the bottom, with the Agro.
It only makes me more grateful for what I have now. Character building!
You should know all about that.....you had french cars!

But that Manta GTE is looooooooovely  I should have had one of those instead of that money pit Capri.

Dave,
If you start the TOC RAV4 Pink Floyd club.......count me in :yahoo: :yahoo:

Paul,
205 GTI's, Astra GTE's had some good times playing with those guys, depending on the state of my tyres at that particular moment. :yahoo:
Golf GTI's had put on to much lard by then......they were easy meat :D

And just to stay on topic, Pink Floyd's very first mode of transport was a 1930's Austin Chummy. First owned
by Nick Mason's father, like this-

Wonderful Dave :toast: Thank you
Nearly went to see Floyd on the Division Bell tour but I asked my mate, he hesitated.....and we all know what happens to he who hesitates :crybaby:

Re work: I was the other way around, lost wieght going from days has an apprentice to shift work. Must of been those big meals in the canteen the dayworkers enjoyed :eat:
But now that I'm stuck in the control room most of the time, it takes great will power to avoid browsing on junk all shift!

To get us back on track, these were the vans we were using in work when I joined shift, Hyundai Pony pick-ups (in that shade of Red as well)

Back in the 1960's we came across an old piece of paper with a list of cars my father had in the 1930's and 1940's which I updated in the 1970's with the ones he'd had since and I finally found it again yesterday.

Once you see these maybe Doric boy needs to be prefixed with 'grumpy old'
