After exchanging my MR2 Mk111 Roadster for a 2003 (03) RAV4 4.2 D4D, I find that I have come across similar misgivings. i.e. The Roadster allegedly has an issue with the pre cats that could affectedly write-off the engine. This has never been proven but the current thinking in the MR2OC is to get rid of them asap. This supposedly gives peace of mind.
The O2 sensors are retained of course and being a VVTII petrol engine are fairly easy to change and read via an OBD11 reader.
The O2 sensors in the RAV4 seem to be in awkward places but theoretically don't need much looking after, however to get to the point. How can I read, via the OBD socket that is present inthecar, the "readings" and codes. I know that diesels only needed to be OBD compliant in 2004, so I am out of it there, but why does Toyota install a OBD11 socket ?
I got rid of the MR2 MK111 because I thought it was a wee bit fragile and susceptible to niggling faults, I also thought that a diesel RAV4 would be quite rugged and failsafe, now I have started reading about DMF problems and I'm back in the same boat. Maybe I should not have bought a Toyota ?
My RAV, so far is brilliant, but now I have these doubts which are always at the back of my mind. I do realise of course that all faults of whatever description will gravitate to these forums whilst the good points never get the publicity they deserve. I suppose the DMF failures are a small percentage of the RAV4 population, can anybody reassure me please?

Having just ordered an OBD II code reader yesterday I was under the impression that all Toyotas have been compliant since 1996 unless someone knows differently.
Reading around this and the Avensis forum there do have seemed to be a lot of DMF problems , but Toyota are not the only manufacturer to have that issue.

Well, right and wrong.
All Toyota Petrol engines since 1996
Diesel Engines from 2004
So what do Toyota use for Diesel readings (pre 2005) and why the obd11 socket ?

I also have a 2003 D4D and have had a few problems with the supply control valves (SCV) on the fuel pump, now thankfully sorted. I bought a cheap code reader from eBay so that I could read the OBD11 system. They are readily available from various web and eBay suppliers from around £15 upwards. I paid around £20 for one, it's easy to check stored codes and reset the management engine light, well worth the money.

Sounds good, can you tell me the model number etc, cos the two that I have don't communicate with my 2003 D4D. in the ISO mode.
I don't want to buy another and have the same problem

Do a search on eBay for -CAN Bus OBDII OBD2 Trouble Code Reader Scanner U480- When I checked again it was actually 24.95 + post, still a good deal considering what dealers charge to check the code as a one-off.

Tried all that and got the U480 this morning, tried and still got Link Error. My 4.2 is August 2003 and according to all the info is NOT compliant. You were obviously lucky somewhere? not me though. Back to keeping fingers crossed and only £29.99 out of pocket (22.95 + 7 p&p)

billmak - I think my confusion over year of compliance is that in europe it was different for petrol and diesel vehicles whereas in the US it says all vehicles. That may explain why the socket is there. Incidentally , it seems a tight fit.
salexander - just reading the manual for the reader and it talks about a vehicle emissions control information label , have you seen one or this not applicable as I can't find one on mine ?

Hi pmb,
Yes the socket is tight because the pins are actually a springy fork type of shape that grips the plug as it enters.
Never seen that label on other cars either, may be just the States. Should work perfectly on your Petrol version tho'
My socket is actually wired for the ISO compliance, but it still does not work with the vehicle, contantly coming up with "link error" So loooks like 2004 is the magic year for diesels compliance after all. (August 2003 does NOT work !)
Must admit they save lots of money, my local Mr T wanted £85.00 just to read, so saved me pounds and pounds on my MR2Mk11.
