Hi Everyone,

I picked up a screw through my front tyre, so I thought I'd pop the spare on, and get the other patched as the new spare temporarily.

Imagine my delight when I discovered that the tool kit I'd only glanced at when buying in a hurry contained only the self-assembly 'T' bar, on which the 'key' to turn the lowering mechanism is fixed. Not to worry, the handbook mentions the one in the glove compartment, along with a few spare bulbs; of course this was gone as well.

Not to worry again, I ordered a spare from some fast part chap, and he came back to me with, "What's the Key Number?" Apparently there are twenty different keys, and they are not recorded in the owner’s book. Toyota said the only chance was if the selling dealer had made a note of it - there is a sticker on the frame when it arrives from the factory. Called the dealer, no Happy Ending here.

So, apart from thoughts on man's inhumanity to man, could anyone give me any ideas??

Thanks in advance and desperation!

Hi there, similar thing happened to me (mine had rusted up that bad that the key just spun on the receiving socket), i had asked my local tyre shop to rotate the wheels so they wear evenly and they discovered it. When i returned to the garage they told me they had had to remove the socket end thats on the car which left a convenient 'groove' into which one of the bars that lowers the wheel carrier or the jack bar (can't remember which one now - was about 9 months ago) fits into and 'drives' the screw on the winch that lowers the spare wheel. Hope this helps.
