I have owned a 1997 Celica for two months,my wife is the main user. ocassional rumbles have been comming from the O/S rear wheel. Which tended to go after a while, but the rear hub became very hot. Then it stated to get worse, so I tried to investgate the cause. First problem found the caliper holding bolts rounded, had to go to the Garage both O/S and N/S bolts had to be drilled out. The Garage removed the Discs/Drums and found nothing wrong, all refitted with new expensive Toyota bolts. Drove car away after a £80 bill and the rumbling was the same with hotting up of the hub. Thought I would have to fix it myself, Garage had tightened Caliper bolts with Airgun could not slacken, so purchased HD deep socket with very long tube and managed the free the bolts with the help of a lump hammer. Found the rear handbrake linning breaking up and worn very thin in the centre, the leading linning was pitted but not much wear. The cause I believe for my problem was the uneven wear which allowed the rear shoe to move about and remain in contact with the drum, the sliding surfaces at the back of the shoe and the backplate was very dry and rusty which should be a sliding fit to allow the lining to become free from the drum, plus mountains of engrained brake dust. Cleaned up the whole area and tried to purchase replacement rear hand brake linnings, my local auto shop tried for two days to aquire the linnings, three different sets came non would fit all had a 25mm Dia cutout at the top insted of approx 16mm to fit the pivot pin. I tried Toyota for linnings they wanted £60 for a set of rear shoes. So my auto shop are going to have my old shoes relined locally as a way forward. I shall do the OS first as thats where the problem is, if successful will have a go on the N/S for progress watch this space. Has anyone else had problems with their Celica hand brake mechanisum?
