Full Version: Service And Mot Plus Tyres
My RAV is due for service and 1st MOT next month, just want some views because the dealer suggested that a brake fluid change and aircon service as well. I am a low mileage user probably less than 5k a year and I only use the aircon now and again (say between 5 and 10 times this year). Do i need my brake fluid change and have an aircon service? Also I want to know if I can change my tyres to a wider one, my current tyre is 225/65/R17, can I go for a 235 or more (any specific brand suggestions please)? I'm thinking if I fail the MOT due to my tyre, I will change for a wider tyres. Any input will be highly appreciated. Thanks.

It should be due for its 3rd service (each at 10k or 12 months) with every other being a major service. If it has been done every time then it should now be due for a minor service regardless of the mileage. The brake fluid should have been done on the second service (every 2nd year) so really you need to look back at what has been done. If it has never had the brake fluid done then you should do so as it might help prolong the life of the ABS pump.
The aircon is completely at your discretion. Mine is 3 years old in September with 20k on the clock and I must admit there are times when I think it isn't as good as it used to be but then others when it really is producing real chilly air so maybe it is my imagination. Unless you think it isn't as good as it should be don't bother as it is often a way of getting you to cough up a bit more money. In my opinion if the car is less than 3 years old they should do it FOC as you would expect a new car to have working A/C for the duration of the warranty so if they do make a fuss then put that to them.
I wouldn't change to wider tyres as they will only be more expensive and I doubt whether you could measure any noticeable difference in performance. Yours will have a spare so I would buy one new and fit the otherwise very expensive ornament. If you really want to go to the wider tyre then take the advice of your local tyre stockist (the major chains might just want you to spend more money).

If you change the filter (behind the glove box) you'll notice an improvement
The filter is around £12 from a dealer (a bit less if you order from Parts-King) and is very easy to fit. You can also get your air con done at an independent place far cheaper than a dealer
