Full Version: Air Con Pump Replacement

I have a 54 reg corolla verso - I recently called out the RAC as there was a strange noise coming from the engine. The RAC guy said it was the air con pump that needed llubricating as it had run dry - he sprayed some WD40 on it and the clunking noise stopped for a while. I took the car into a toyota dealership and they are quoting £700/800 for a replacement air con pump. This seems crazy for the age of the car - 34k miles aprox 5k a year. Is this a common problem with the Verso - I feel I should contact Toyota directly and complain. Please could anyone advise on what to do or if they have experienced the same problem ?

Has the Air Con system got any history of servicing? If its run out of oil then it will break, if you contact TUK i expect they will ask this first.

Will have to check - bought the car 2nd hand from dealership. I know the oil was running low but still above min limit.

I don't think Toyota has any service requirements for the airco in a Verso, there are none included in the Service Scheme as published by the Dutch importer.

It depends how often the A/C was used. The system is usually self lubricating but if it is never turned on things can cease up. If it was only used once every month for five minutes then it probably also never had a chance to lubricate correctly.

I mean re-gassed/sanitised etc, i do agree with Ian as well if its not used regularly then problems will arise.

My wife uses the car to ship our two kids around so the air con was used on a regular basis. The car was off the road recently in the hot weather for 1 week but if this causes the air con pump to be replaced then that's unexceptable. The air con still works but just makes a strange noise i.e needs lubricating as such this is been estimated at £850 for the pump + labour which is a joke. Was thinking of using a breakers for the part but only get 3 mth part warantee.

I know I leave the climate control with A/C on all year round. Keeps things cool in Summer and the windows de-misted in Winter.

Yep the same used all year round - just back from Toyota the air con compressor needs replacing £1200 !! Guy said never seem this before on Verso so going to take the case direct to Toyota. Due to replace car in November think i will go for VW Touran unless Toyota replace the part !

See if they will put a claim in for you

My mates mum and dad have a Touran, it needed a new head gasket with 200 miles on the clock and has been nothing but trouble with electrical and fuel pump issues. Horses for Courses ;)

The dealership did and came back with a total price of £775 from £1060. Still not good enough for a problem unheard of on the Verso it was clearly a faultly part from new. 54 plate on 34k miles ! phoned customer relations and it's like banging your head against a brick wall - i find it incredible that during a recession Toyota do not strive to retain their customers - told them i was planning on buying a new MPV in Nov and that i'd be looking at the VW Touran instead...
