Diesel Lack Of Power In Morning

I have a 2008 2.2 Diesel T180, which has 50k miles on clock, majority is motorway driving.

For the past 6 months the car has had no accelerating power for the 1st 5 minutes when cold. On Saturday it couldnt even make it up a small hill, and I had to drive it around a car park for 5 minutes to resolve the issue. Its only a problem when cold, and resolves itself after 5 minutes, but is a nightmare if joining any traffic.

Its been to the garage 5 times, each time they cant find a fault code. The last time they changed a sensor in the exhaust, which helped for about 2 weeks, but didnt resolve the issue.

hello

your injectors just pour diesel into combustion chamber but this diesel is not injected with initial vapours resulting that a drops of diesel can not be burnt withing your five mins unless the engin egot heated. Hav all four injector tested first. THe problem is there. Cheers/Igor

I too own a T180 and I have noticed similar -I strongly suspect that the engine management system is throttling the engine back until it is fully warm to prolong engine life etc etc

My t180 is not has responsive for the first few miles on cold mornings has it would be when warmed up. I would say thats is true of most engines they tend to give less when cold to pro long engine life. Mine still pulls well enough i would not say its a fault with mine. My mates celica gt4 does not boost has well when cold.

You may have a underlying problme cos mine would make small hills no problem it spends most of its weekends around borth in wales and is hitting hill climbs after seconds of being fired up.

Sorry i cannot help much paul t180 but just thought i add my experience.

My T180 also is reluctant to give 'maxpower' when first run cold, so I think that the engine management system is protecting a cold engine from harsh abuse.

Only a problem in winter if pulling out into a main road and need to pull out quickly otherwise it's not a problem.

Car running very well in all respects, getting average of 45 - 46 mpg and upto 56 mpg on a long journey!

Cheers

Hi Paul has your car done this since it's last Toyota service? If so they may have done an ECU update which does in fact address an over fueling issue when the engine is cold. Mine has had this update and it did make a slight difference but not like what you are describing. I have always shown a cold engine some respect so maybe this is why i don't notice the low power issue so much, it can take up to 3 miles to reach normal operating temperature. Keep on at the dealer until they have sorted it out, maybe you could leave it there overnight so they can try it out from cold.

Regards Pete.
