Auto Wipers - Gone Mad?

Hi all, This is the first time that I've been on the forum so hello to everybody and apologies if this is a noddy question. I've just bought an Avensis T180 Tourer on an 06 plate as of a few weeks ago. I'm still getting used to the car and like it a lot but one thing I cannot get to to grips with are the automatic wipers! If I put the setting onto intermittent wipe the wipers go mad (faster than the normal speed wipers!) regardless of whether there are a few drops of rain or not. I switch the control to 'off' on the intermittent wipe thinking that this will disable the auto wipers but it makes no difference. Is this normal as I am worried that I am going to damage the wipers or screen at the speed they are going? Is there a way to switch the auto wipers off on the intermittent speed??

Many thanks in advance.

When the wipers are set to auto, they judge their speed depending on how much rain is picked up by the sensor. You can set how much rain is needed to start the wipers by turning the dial to - or +. If you turn it towards the + it will start when it picks up little rain.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply. I understand how the wipers are supposed to work and the different speed settings that can be used by choosing either the '-' or -+- setting. This makes little difference as they seem to operate on one speed i.e. v fast even when there is v little rain, which is why I wanted to know if I could disable them and just have a 'normal' intermittent wipe setting. I assumed that by stting the position to 'off' that this would disable the auto wipers and a 'normal' intermittent wiper would be used.

Thanks again.

Don't think there's a 'normal' intermittent facility provided, but your wipers should not go 'v fast' all the time, so perhaps you have a fault with them. As the earlier poster said, their speed should be governed by how much rain hits the sensor.

However, they are most definitely something I personally would be happy to be without, much prefer to use the flick-wipe facility.

yes, the intermittent thing drives me crazy too. I have found that the speed at which they wipe is also governed by yr actual speed. if its light rain and im going at lower speed, mine will wipe every now and again if i have the setting on the -, or faster if on the + etc. when driving slower, and it rains more, the wipers speed increases to cope with the increase in water volume. likewise if im driving on the motorway etc, the wipers will work faster to again cope with the increased water volume. thats my experiences of it at least. if that doesnt match your driving and so on, then maybe you do need to have it checked out.

i tend to use the flick up wipe when i need to in lighter rain and then i just switch to the lower constant wiping when the rain picks up.

good luck.

Hi Dave

Most likely the issue is due to some slight displacement of the smaller wiper (16") as this is the one that wipes the surface of the sensor. I had the same problem until I realised that once the wiper does not go over the sensor (in its full length) and leaves some water untouched the wipers would go mad. The opiginal Toyota wipers cost less than £ 20. Once you sort this out you would really enjoy the facility.

I hope this might help you.

Cheers,

Jordan

actually following on from Jordan, Toyota operate a fixed price scheme for certain things like batteries, wipers etc. According to the Toyota website, the charge is £20 for a replacement set of wipers, fully fitted including VAT. Speak to your dealer. £20 not bad for the real deal.

(Toyota home page, Menu on left, select Owners, then Fixed Price promise)

Cheers

Mike
