Am I Covered Under Warranty

My 05 RAV4 has covered 44,500 miles now and getting a bad steering wheel judder when braking, but fine otherwise.

Suspecting warped front discs, took it into Dealer for evaluation and they had a test drive and told me I am looking at replacement discs and pads all round, and at a cost of over £500 all in.

When I told them I had extended warranty, they said they would call Toyota to check that the discs are covered but I would probably have to pay parts for the pads, which I think is probably reasonable enough.

So my question is ..... will Toyota turn round and tell me that the discs are a consumable item and not covered by warranty?

I looked at the info and I read this:

What's Covered - Braking System.

What's Not - Brake and Clutch Adjustments and replacements due to wear.

Now I have not had to call on the extended warrenty on my RAV before, but on my Celica back in 1995, under extended warranty I had a blown exhaust replaced on a 5 year old GT4, which amazed me; but they refused to replace a broken electric window switch under warranty - which also amazed me!

I am thinking if I need to pay £400+ for something I would honestly expect to be covered by warranty, why bother getting it at all and will be rather annoyed (to put it mildly), but if it is covered, then money very well spent and maybe extend again next May!

Gonna find out in the morning what the verdict is, but any opinions as to what I will be told?

Hi Hoovie

You should argue that the discs are not worn but are suffering from run out or disc thickness variation. Tell them that the degree of wear is not an issue but the safet control of the vehicle has become unacceptable.

Thanks AM, I was thinking along those lines after I posted - as long as the minimum thickness is not reached, then should be covered?

I am hoping not to have to argue the point, but the way car companies are losing money right now, I can see them being far stricter on these kind of things then in the past.

I'll post an update when I hear, but I have good feelings about this dealership and lets hope I am right :)

I had a similar problem with my celica 1 year ago and they changed the discs under warranty FOC but charged for the pads , which i thought was good of them . They said the discs where warped and it wasnt down to wear & tear . Good luck

Toyota skimmed my front discs under waranty on my 06 plate T180, mind you I did have to pay for the pads. I would normally have fitted new discs but since they offered to do it under waranty I agreed to that, discs were as good as new afterwards

Hi guys.

Well, got the call from the garage and said that Toyota have approved the repair under warranty, just need to pay for pads

Happy with that and makes the warranty good value as money saved (when work done at mean dealer) is not that far off the total price paid for warranty :)

  • 2 weeks later...

Now got nice shiny new Discs all round on my RAV4 and the juddering when breaking totally gone.

Total cost was a touch under £100 for the Pads and all done very efficiently by Border Toyota in St Boswells who collected the car at 8am and returned it mid-afternoon all nicely clean as well :)
