Hello there.

I can confirm the DRL will turn on automatically with the ignition - your rearlamps will probably not be working.

Turning the sidelights on will cancel the DRL function and allow normal use of Headlamps (and then turn on your rearlamps)

At night, turning on your headlamps will turn off the DRL.

The xenon lamps (Dip beam) is being used as DRL because your car does not have a specific DRL (not mandatory until 6th February 2011)

In Finland we don't have a separate DRL system on Avensis. All the lights will turn on when you start the car. When using the Auto position on the light switch, all the lights are on daytime running position. Means that the instrument lights etc. are on highest intensity setting and all the outside lights are on. When it get dark enough, the instrument lights will dim and the the outside lights go to "night" setting, which means that you are able to use high beams etc.
