Knocking & Squeeking Noise From Rear Of Car

Hi

For about a month ive heard knocking and squeeking sounds from the back of the car. The noises are loudest on un-even and bumpy roads and when taking a turn left or right.

Sounds like its inside the car i.e. something in the boot is causing the noise. But everything is secure in the boot and i even took everything including spare tyre out and still the noise is there.

Its less in the morning but increases as the day goes on. I drive constantly all day as part of my job so its annoying. Also if there is extra weight in the back the noise reduces slightly.

On Friday i took the car for MOT and Service and the mechanic told me that my rear shock absorber was leaking and replaced it. I hoped that this would solve the problem but it hasn't made a slight bit of difference.

Anyone got any idea what the problem might be? Also approx cost of parts?

Many thanks as always

Did you bounce the car up and down after you took out the spare wheel? If the squeaking was in the suspension then you should notice it there. If it's not the suspension then it may just be a panel squeaking somewhere. (fingers crossed that's all it is!) You could have a look around where you think the squeaks are, maybe there's something obvious. Jam a bit of paper or rubber in there and go for a short drive and listen.

Best of luck.

grease up the boot lock catch.

D'oh!! I forgot that one. I had to stick a bit of foam matting in the latch because the boot lid was driving me crazy. Now it's tight like a tiger!

Will try doing this, but boot latch is firm as i tested that before, doesn't move at all.

never tried bouncing the car, will try that a little later. did notice that a screw is missing from the top of a plastic panel, tried moving it to see if it created a noise but was pretty quiet, but will try and secure it incase it is something obvious like that

Check the rubber insulators that the rear springs sit on, these may have worn or perished and causing the spring to hit the axle, ie metal to metal.

I replaced mine last year and it made a big difference, cost about £10 from the stealers. ;)

Problem solved.

The screw that was missing on the plastic panel at the back of the car was the cause. Such a silly little thing. Thanks for your suggestions everyone.

You were spot on. Was just a panel squeeking. Such an annoying noise all caused by one missing screw.

thanks
