Where To Buy Cheap 16" Steel Wheel Avensis? Downgrading 17"

I have an '08 2.2D4D TR Avensis h/back with the original 17” alloys, 215/50-17 tyres... done about 32k & the original tyres upfront are getting near needing replacing: Rears ain't bad (yes I know they should have been rotated but it has been serviced solely by Mr T....)

I've already replaced the skinny space-saver spare with a steel-wheel 16” & 205/55-16 tyre (never fancied spinning down the M6 in the wet on a narrow rubber band....)

Planning (probably) to put current rears on the front & 2xsteel 16”'s on the back....as I intend to go to the 16”s eventually all-round for a bit more ride comfort (I already have my 'bus pass... sad isn't it.... )

Question...

i) Cheapest place do get a genuine, non-bent, Mr T 16” wheels?? The one I bought was T42611-05280 (I think...)

ii) Any views on the legality of 17” 215s up front, 16” 205s at rear?

iii) Any other suggestions??

PS Prices are amazingly different for the different tyres.... Blackcircles (eg ) quote....

215/50/17 V rating Goodyear NCT5 @ £114:60 fitted etc...

205/55/16 V rating Goodyear NCT5 @ £66:54 fitted etc...

as the Merkins say, go figure!!!

Regards & thanks in advance...

I don't think that will be the correct wheel and tyre combination, the rolling diameter will be different and thus the speedo will read slightly wrong. I think to be the same as the 215/50/17 you are going to need to use 205/60/16 or 215/55/16 tyres.

I think you're about spot on there 'peanutome'. To make up for the difference in wheel diameter the tyres need to be about 12mm deeper in the profile (2 x 12mm =24mm, roughly 1 inch). 215/50 is 107.5mm so the new 16 inch tyres need to be around 120mm, 205/55 are only 112.75mm where 205/60 are 123mm and 215/55 are 118.25mm, therefore much closer.

This is of course presuming that the 17 inch wheels and tyres are the correct ones for the car initially.

this is silly!!!!keep the propper size on the car just phone about for prices even try eBay if i can get a 215 40 18 for £30.00(scotyre) i'm sure you can get a tyre cheaper than £100!!!!

when you start increasing tyre profiles you mess with the cars road holding and handling!!

Thanks guys ...

as it happens Mr T appears to have a different view: In Owners Manual (Page 420 if anyone is desperate..) the "Tires" for engines (All diesel)

1AD-FTV (1998cc)

2AD-FTV (2231cc, 136bhp)

2AD-FHV (2231cc, 177bhp) (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_AD_engine )

are listed as...

205/55R16 &

215/50R17

(with the same suggested pressures..)

I take the point about rolling circumferences etc.. but as it happens (see my post about establishing the actual speed & working out how much the speedo is reading incorrectly at

//toyotaownersclub.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=90363

- a slight readjustment in circumference to 205/55R16s would at least give me a slightly less accurate speedo:

Thanks again all..

you have to watch out with the 2.2D4D Avensis wheels as for some reason some wheels that are suitable for use with the other engines aren't for it - e.g. Parts-King a while ago had a great deal on 1 style of Avensis 16" alloys but they weren't suitable for my 2.2 (I've never been particularly keen on the look of the alloys that came on the car).

  • 2 years later...

Finally got round to doing this & now have 2x16in steels & 205/55R16s on the front.

The ride, noise & comfort MUCH improved.

Re speedo readings I checked (using SatNav..). With the old 17in alloys the speedo read a bit high (actual 70mph showed about 75 on speedo..). With steels & 205/55s about 77.

btw you need different (very different) wheel-nuts. I ended up buying 100 from Mr T, T90942-01021, at (arrgghhhh) £43:32.. Possibly cheaper on eBay...

No I'm not planning on selling the alloys...
