97 Celica 1.8st

hi dave here im new to the forum but need big help, my son has a celica 1.8 st 1997 he lost his keys so we got another with transponder ring, we fitted it the car turned over kicked coughed splutterd then died , we thought petrol because it was more or less empty so we put £5 woth in. but all that it do's now is turn over but wont kick in. can any one please advise :(
