Are There Lot Of Faults On Yaris?

Hi,

My sister has bought a second hand Yaris. I don't know wich model. She don't know neither. When I ask her she tells me it is green.

I read the very long thread about the gearbox problems. Wich gearboxes is it that have been faulty? Please tell me the name of the boxes.

Is it anything else known as a weak construction in the Yaris?

Thanx in advance.

The gearbox issues are for the new model Yaris but occasionally the older Yaris (Mine being one) can suffer from clutch judder.

Mine only does it in cold weather so it's not an issue for me, i know how to treat the clutch now when it does start to judder.

As for reliability,

All in all, my own Yaris Mk1 (Jap built 1.3sr 86bhp) has been a great little car, it has been very reliable and does'nt cost me much to maintain, the engine has a camchain instead of a belt so cambelt changes are not an issue, servicing is every 10-12k (I think) but i allways change my oil and renew the spark plugs every 5-7k just because it's easy to do and the car seems to like it.

Build quality is not that good i have to admit, compared to say a Polo or Golf, my Yaris interior does feel a bit too flimsy and cheap but for the reliability, the looks, the great performance, fuel costs, and maintainance costs i can forgive it for.

Check the rear wheel arches and rear sills for any corrosion or bad accident damage repairs. I saw a black SR once that had awfull rotted sills, simply because it had been accident damaged and not repaired correctly, so it rusted very badly and then was patched up crudely.

The Mk1 Yaris also has a 12yr anti corrosion warranty though, so if it's never been damaged it should be ok bodywise but allways check anyway like you would with any car.

Can't think of anything else.......Anyone anything further to add?

Good luck. ;)

Yeah, the 2003 and onwards Mk1 Yarisseseses are pretty much bullet proof if they're looked after (Regular oil changes etc.).

Heck There was a guy here who took a wrecked one and repaired it and apparently it's been fine ever since!

The early Mk2 ones seem to have a few niggly faults judging by the threads, but most of them have been sorted out in the newest versions, e.g. when they went from 1.3 to 1.33 petrol engines.

(I have a Mk1 D4D so can't really comment much about the Mk2's)

Thanx for the answers. I asked my sister once again. She told me that it is from 2001. She didn't have any clue about wich engine it was, but she almost could the license plate now. With that info I now know that it is built Dec 2000, has the 1SZ-FE engine and it was built in Japan.

I have already ordered the Haynes manual for her husbands birthday in April. Just in case.
