P0488 Egr Throttle Position Sensor Fault

Hi all. Wondered if anyone could shed some light on fault code P0488. What is the egr throttle position sensor. Is it part of the egr valve itself or is it a completely different setup. I know the egr valve has a position sensor but is this the throttle position sensor, or are they different things?

Anyone solved a P0488?

Cheers

This is all I have to help you at present :- Code P0448= Evaporative Emission Control System Vent Control Circuit Shorted.

Maybe a Toyota Tech on the forum can help.

Regards Pete.

Hi pete. Thanks for the quick reply. Iwas referring to code p0488 and not p0448. Think itrelates to the egr throttle position sensor circuit out of range. Any ideas? I think this code has nothing to do with the egr position sensor on the egr valve but a throttle position sensor somewhere else. I guess that would need confirmed by a toyota techie?

Cheers,

Andy

Sorry about that Andy, my mistake but my database only shows up to P0485 anyway.

Regards and best of luck with it .... Pete.

Hi again,

Turns out this fault may have something to do with the Intake Shutter Valve on the Inlet Manifold. Looks like it does a similar job as the Valve on an EGR. When you accelerate it opens and when you start the car it opens.

If the system detects that the valve isn't open under acceleration conditions it throws up a DTC and goes into limp mode.

Will hopefully get it looked at this weekend and will keep posted as to how it goes.

To andrewmurphy.

Your code is showing up as you say as a EGR fault. Toyota tech replied to posting i made along similiar lines some time back. Pointing out that EGR valve is electronically controlled, this could be your reason for receiving your error code.

Not to be confused with a Potentiometer which is located on the throttle body of most cars.

Regards, Beagh.

PS: Keep us informed of your outcme.

Hi beagh cheers for reply. I ran the car for a drive with the egr disconnected and its still throwing up the fault. So the egr has been eradicated as a fault point. This fault code points to the inlet supply valve (also called the egr throttle position sensor) on the inlet manifold which also controls the levels of exhaust gas going into the engine. (or so ive been told by a techie). I'll keep you posted. Personally i think limp mode is a rather dangerous feature in a car esp on the motorway. Its hard to relax when your driving!

All,

Got closure on this issue with fault code P0488.

A new Throttle Body / Intake Shutter was fitted and the EML hasn't come on yet.

Thanks all for your help

Received code P0488-on Avensis 07 D4D. It went in to limp mode. Removed throttle body -gave it a thorough cleaning plus EGR valve ditto--No joy. Got second hand Throttle Body from Traynors of Omagh for £80.00. They deliver to your door--almost !! Throttle Body and Sensor is integrated. Problem solved .
