hey ive got a mark II t3 yaris and for the life of me i cant decide what size alloys to get.

i have got 15 inch trims on at the moment but i think trims look tatty and im thinking that they look too small for the car.

has anyone got any views on having 16s or 17s on the yaris. im worried that they will look to big. or even will they fit?? i dont want to have to bother getting the wheel arches rolled or any speedo adjustment

also does having bigger wheels make the car look too high. i think the yaris is quite a tall car already so i dont want it to look ridiculous and i havent got the money or the want to get it lowered.

any advice welcome. id also love to see some pictures

thankyou

Hi Emily

I have 17" alloys on my 3 door 2006 T3. They look great but the car is lowered on TTE springs by about 35mm. Before it was lowered it did look....wrong.

The wheels are 17x7 and the offset is 38mm which is slightly more than the standard wheels which are 45mm. This means that the wheels sit 7mmm further out than the originals. this does give the car a squatter more planted look but as aforesaid, lowering the car made a huge difference to its appearance.

There have been no clearance problems at all with these wheels, even fully loaded. The tyres are 205/40/17 the next ones will have 45 profile as the 40's look a bit skinny!

16" or 17" wheels are both fine on the Yaris - Toyota themselves fit both sizes as standard to various Yaris models.

The 2008 SR has 205/50 tyres on 16" alloys and with this size, the speedo is unaffected.

The 1.8SR models has 17" wheels as standard, so they're fine too - although they will tend to be a harder ride as the tyres will be shallower.

(Whatever size wheels you fit, you will fit correspondingly shallower tyres, so that the total diameter of the whole wheel & tyre remains the same... The bigger the wheels, the more metal and less air that you'll be riding on...)

You're right about the ride height though. Our 2008 SR has springs that reduced the ride height by 40mm front and back. It makes the car look mich better and I couldn't believe how different and "top heavy" the ordinary Yaris looked when we had a TR courtesy car recently.... They will cost a few pounds to buy and have fitted - but will make it look much better.

If you want to compare wheel sizes, go to your local Toyota dealer and have a look at a 2008 SR with its 16" wheels and lowered springs in the used car lot and compare it to the other Yarii around it - and if they have a use 1.8SR, you can see what 17" wheels look like too...

Here's what 16" wheels look like with the lowered springs. (Just happended to have this photo on the PC) Compare this to the shape of your own wheel arch and you'll see the difference that lowering the standard suspension makes to the gap around the tyres.

This is a standard Toyota model, so there won't be any issues making the same changes ot your T3... (or save the money up and go and buy a used 2008 SR to replace it....)

Just found this piccie of a Yaris with standard suspension to compare the ride height and wheel arch space...

So changing the wheels won't make the tyres fill the wheelarch gaps any more - the total diameter of the tyres will be the same whatever size wheel is fitted - It will improve the look because you will see more metal wheel and less black tyre around it - but you'll have to change the springs to get the "lowered" look as shown on the grey SR picture.
