Yaris Has Brilliant Mot Pass Record....

The BBC have forced the publication of MOT pass and failure rates for 2007.

There's an article here and you can download the full spreadsheet from a link in the article

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/8456116.stm

They quote the corolla as doing well, but if you analyse the spreadsheet and exclude any cars with less than 60,000 MOTs in the year (to avoid "specialist" cars with low counts that skew the figures - like a 100% success rate on Lamborghini Gallardos because the only one they tested passed...), then the Yaris tops the table with a failure rate of only 16.8%

And when you look at the table in more detail - more than a third of those Yaris failures were tyre related - which is down to the owner entirely and not the car's fault - so the car itself was the cause of even fewer failures than the already excellent result suggests.

As expected Japanese cars all do well.....

When my car was MOT'd the bloke said it was as clean as a whistle and a fine example of a well taken care of car.

I have had a read through the data and in all honesty it's about as useful as a cat-flap in a submarine. There are just far too many variables to draw any meaningful conclusions especially when the majority of tests are not carried out by independent examiners.:)

It better have a good pass rate! My one's currently in for an MOT and I really can't afford to pay out for anything more than the MOT itself and the work i've identified and done myself. Figers crossed eh? :P

If your car is due for an MOT I highly recommend you take it to a Government run MOT test centre. They don't do repairs so have no vested interest to fail more than is necessary. They will also perform a stringent check on your vehicle so if it passes you know it is safe and road worthy. I've taken both my cars to the one in Oxford and both passed with flying colours.

Yep mine passed last Friday, no problems at all and no advisories either.

Great garage who did it, cost me £45 for the MOT and they checked and adjusted the alternator belt for free.

When i asked if everything was ok, they gave the car a clean bill of health commenting on it's condition for a 91/2 year old car. But i allways keep it clean and well maintained and allways believe that if you look after a vehicle properly, the vehicle will look after you and be reliable for years.

The garage i use is in the good garage scheme, plus i have known them a while and trust them completely. ;)

Happy days.

Having a car is very much like having a missus. Treat her wrong and they'll be hell to pay. Treat her right and you'll have an enjoyable time ;)

Just make sure you service her more than once a year!

Although it doesn't tell you the full story I am relieved to see that the failure rate is lower than Ford Ka,

The ARB bushes can wear on any car, it's not just a Yaris problem.

Some stay ok for longer which is confusing. As far as i'm aware mine have never been changed and it's going to be 10yrs old this April.

Still, no advisories on all the old MOT's and none for the recent MOT either. :D

One day they will need replacing but untill then i'm just gonna leave them as i'm curious just how long they will last!

One thing puzzles me... The Yaris has Toyota's long life coolant and the service manual says to change this after ten years. What do you do when this happens? Do you put in another lot of long life fluid and don't change it for ten years or what? My car will be ten years in April :D.

I checked that government website to look at the MOT history of my car. (Quite interesting!)

Apart from realising i've put the most miles on it in one year of the entire computerised history of it ( ) it has failed an MOT once due to an ill fitting exhaust mounting. Still, the car's 11 in march so I think its doing okay! :)

Assuming that you've already got "pink" long life antifreeze and you buy the same to replace it, then the Toyota-Europe service schedule says replace at 90,000 miles and then every 54,000 miles after that....

http://techdoc.toyota-europe.com/Maintenan...yaris/Final.pdf

If you're using blue, red or green anti freeze, it says "replace every three years".

I changed mine at 8 years to be safe, because for a tenner, it wasn't worth the risk of a frozen engine...

The guy who I bought my Yaris from had it MOT'd for me at a centre run by Walsall Council and it failed on guess what? A tyre!!

There's no excuse for a car to fail an MOT on a dodgy tyre imo. These are easily checked everyweek when you wash the car, and if a driver does'nt know if a tyre is bald they should not be driving anyway!

Same goes for lights, exhaust blowing, brakes grinding and rust under the sills and crossmembers.

All easily checked by anyone without mechanical knowledge, just common sense needed.
