What's My Problem!

I have a 2004 Avensis T-Spirit 2.0 D4-D (or more precisely my wife has a .....)

Anyway, I recently became aware that the headlights are very poor. A few months ago (maybe just over a year ago) I fitted a xenon convesion kit from eBay and the light was fantastic. However, I suddenly realised a couple weeks ago that the lights were terrible, so I swapped out the xenons for standard Halogens and the problem is even worse.

Looking at the car the lights look bright enough, but when driving there is virtually no light on the road - it almost seems like the lamps are not "throwing" the light properly.

Has anyone come across this problem and a solution - I really dont fancy driving the Avensis in the dark now - I almost clipped a banking on the way home tonight as I just didnt see it!

Thanks

Greg

To Mean Green,

Your problem is your car is very very good, only let down by absolutely awful headlamps as you already are aware. And as with most things purchased of S--B-- , it's 50/50 as too your purchase being of any use. Visit site www.HIDS4U.co.uk for well made plug& play lighting systems, 5000k gives off white light, anything above this number gives a blue tinge to lights. Leave legality of fitting these lights to others on forum, you will have to decide for yourself.

Regards, Beagh.

HI Greg;

probably a stupid remark here, but I'm going to make it anyway: You havent moved the wheel for the height adjustment of the headlights all the way to '5' haven't you?

Might be worth a check, as you mention the light is not being 'thrown' properly.

Otherwise you might want to get the intensity and adjustment checked. Most places might offer such a service, and inside the adjustment /measuring box there is normally a cell that measures thei intensity.

Hi Rick,

I had already thought of that and have checked it - it is definately set to 0 and the lamps are def motoring. But I is exaactly what I thought was wrong, it is almost like the light is focusing immedaitley infront of the car rather than throwing forward.

But I cant think of what would cause it to suddenly change. There had been no interference, adjustment or fiddling made to the lamps for best part of a year.

Hi,

Have not used those xenon lamps, but it does sound more like an electrical fault - when you fitted the Halogen bulbs back in did you disconnect the xenon Ballasts as well ?

Have to ask the obvious, but the bulbs / cut out pips are located correctly in the holders, you see so many fitted wrong as its so easy to do when working in that confined space.

Not sure if your Avensis wiring is the same as my earlier one, but that has the headlights earths connected together and screwed to the chassis - if that point has slowly corroded you will get that kind of poor beam.

What I would do to simply prove the fault, I would take two wires from the Battery +12v and 0v direct onto one bulb and see how that compares to the other headlight run via the cars circuit.

Hi Greg, this headlight saga has run and run but I would like to add my experience, a couple of months ago my 07 t-spririt had two headlights replaced due to misting up. The new lights were slightly brighter than before on dipped beam but when main beam is on it's like the light increases x2 on the offside ..... but shines only 10 feet in front of the car! I took it back to the dealer who tested it on the MOT rig and reported that it was spot on. The nearside seems to be ok as it lights up the kerb for quite some way but could be a lot brighter, what I don't understand is why the offside is just like a double bright dipped beam if you catch my drift ..... weired? I have the lights set as high as I can with the adjuster inside the car but it is still very poor on the offside. I sorry this doesn't help your case but is your one like this or are both lights bad.

Regards Pete.

i had the same problem 2004 avensis. its the mounting for the bulb is made of cheap plasic and it melts which moves where the bulbs should be. to look at the lights they look fine but there not centred. i brought mine to toyota and they replaced both headlights free of charge it is a known problem.

My reply was going to be along the lines of what davegooner7 said !! there is a known problem of the light holders melting because they are made of plastic and throwing the beam direction off meaning the lights are not as good !!

They were replaced under warranty with metal ones and I think helped the problems .

To be honest Toyota Headlight s are not very good

interesting... I bought a 2nd hand Avensis (04 TX-3) and couldn't believe the lights the first few times riding at night.. I had to stop to check they were on. Lights are on but seem dimmer than they should and don't throw any light on the road. brights(highbeam) are a different matter. will have to look into this at next Toyota service.

Don't forget, the MOT rig only looks at the dip beam for angle and pattern. Usually this means main beam is ok but not always.

I've just done MOT (at Kwikfit) and they agree that the light is on the low side.. but apparently good enough for it to be roadworthy... so in the meantime driving car as is with dim crappy lights.. if I ever need more light I just have to flick to high beams.. could blind an owl from 500 yards.
