Using Wynns Carburetor Cleaner Query?

HI Pro's...

Has anyone used wynns carburetor cleaner to clean out their carb, engine, manifold etc? How do you do it? and does it really make a difference? My 2001 1.8vvti SR Hatch has done 86,000 miles so will i need 1 can 500mls or should i use 2 cans? Is there anything i need to be careful of? finally rather than removing the pipes connecting to the carb itself cant i spray it through the air filter box? I assume it will still go into the engine??? Thanks in advance!

The last carburettor I sat eyes in was around 20 years ago. :eek:

Modern cars such as yours don't have such a thing and spraying anything into the induction system can do damage to various sensors so I wouldn't recommend it. Certain aspects of the system can be cleaned but you need to know exactly what your are doing and just firng something into the inlet definitely isn't the way to go. Unless you want something to go BOOM!!!!!!

Oh I just love the smell of frying engine components first thing in the morning.LOL!!

If you must use anything, you need injector cleaner which you add to the fuel tank when filling up. As for the carb cleaner, spray a small amount onto a cloth and use to remove tar spots from your paintwork, wash and polish afterwards.

I am no mechanic (at all) but I'd personally look into those two error codes that your ECU highlighted previously. If its a sensor fault surely that means your car is running richer than it should be? (i.e. using more fuel to compensate due to a faulty sensor?)

Hi Sam,

Well I have just got my Mk1 Avensis through the MOT and the emissions test results were slightly better than last year, despite using the same suspect sensor which comes on now and then.

I used a bottle of CataClean plus fitted a brand new air filter just prior to the test - seems to have improved things just enough.

Despite the check light coming on occassionally I still get the 40+ mpg I have always have returned for the last 8 years, there might the creedance to a previous post where similar problems are known to be caused by bad wiring connection from the sensor to the ecu etc.

I never tried this myself, so can't say if it does any harm. But on the forum on toyotanation.com after asking about an idle problem my car had, they told me about something called seafoam. Apparently they flushed it trough the trottlebody. They also told me that oldfashioned carburettor cleaner might do the job. Now as i say, i never tried it. Turned out that my problem was a stuck IAC valve, but the guys on there seemed to use it a lot.

02 plate 1.8vvti, average consumption in this colder weather is around 35/36, in warmer weather it is 38. That's on a mix of town and out of town driving approx 50/50.

Sorry i got it wrong...what i meant to say was spraying wynns "Air intake carurettor cleaner" into the throttle housing!!!! Well i tried it out on saturday morning...stripped off the pipes between the air filter box and trottle body...switched the engine on whilst my parter blocked the opening of the throttle body with a clean towel...then slightly revved the engine to keep it turning...i sprayed the whole 500mls into the trottle body...i must say...i have never seen so much smoke and crap coming out of the exhaust before...thing is im not sure if it worked but the engine seems to run a little smoother! I wanted to down another can of the stuff at the same time just to make sure it worked but decided not to...i havent driven the car since so im hoping all is well...has anyone else tried this??? apparently its supposed to clean the throttle body...manifold...cat...etc etc! Please do let me know. Regards...sam

Well, i suppose the reason that some people don't like it, is that they are worried about damaging the injector nozzles. I know it's not supposed to be put in the petrol. There are special injector cleaners for that.

Hi guys...just a follow up...a week after spraying that stuff into my throttle housing...the smell is terrible...like a burning smell..looks like its gonna take a while for it to go away! The smoke from the exhaust is clean and white so i dont know!!!

How is the car running now? Did the smell eventually fade away, or is it still present?

Along with some other stuff, I bought some of this Wynn's Fuel Injection Intake & Carb Cleaner just before Halfords closed last night - but am just doing further research before using it.

I'm not sure I'd use a full can in one go though. Maybe just a few squirts/blasts down the throttle body of a non-Toyota car, which I'm sure is having problems due to too many short journeys = carbon buildup = loads of scanned fault codes pointing towards that problem = lot of stalling / rough idle and limp mode. I've had the throttle body cleaned and it is running better than before, but warning light still comes on occasionally so problem might be deeper down with carbon in the EGR or inlet manifold.

A post on another forum warns that it is quite strong stuff. Just giving you the headsup incase they are correct and later on you find your car is running rough due to a corroded seal/gasket.

To clean it properly use Wynns carb and injection cleaner (purple can) from halfords for a fiver. Be careful though, because its very corrosive, I melted a toothbrush, and the piping under the kitchen sink, oops. Also avoid getting it on the seals too much, so best to remove the throttle body. Do not attempt to reuse the gasket under the throttle body, obtain a new one (£4 from VW), if you get a vacuum leak under the throttle body it really will drive like a bag of terd, and will fail the MOT miserably.... Can you tell I did that once????
