hi folks

i was asked today to give a work colleague a jump start as his crappy vauxhall vectra would'nt start...

but as usual i had to undo the plastic 'screws' on the Battery cover and do the honours

does anybody here know why 'they' put the Battery in such a strange position under the bonnet of rav4's

its allways been a pain to get to :(

why not at the front ,tucked just behind one of the headlights?,so its easier to get to

even on land cruisers they are just behind the headlights

there must be a reason for it....probably obvious

The 4.1 original RAV engine position etc really didn't have much space under the bonnet - which I suspect led them to put a small Battery in as well. The 4.1 was I think the smallest of the RAV breed whereas now it has become a monster, there isn't the same issue.

Don't forget the design was driven by the biggest market. Although it never actually got bigger than a 4 cylinder 2.4 there may well have been aspirations for a V6.

It could be worse. Some of the American cars like the Chevy HHR and Dodge Charger have the Battery in the rear cargo area. They usually provide a couple of lugs in front for jumper cables, but it still seems stupid to me.

Probably much safer up there. Even a minor shunt on a 4.3 is going to end up with Battery acid being sprayed all over the place.

You can actually fit a standard size Battery in a mk 1 rav, i know because ive done it, as for batteries being fitted in the rear of a vehicle, it's done for weight distribution, if you notice most fast rear drive cars have the Battery in the boot,

ancs - the RAV4 in USA did boast a V6 option!

on the fitting of a standard Battery as dickyc2 mentions, a standard is what you make it. I use large batteries for all of our fleet, none of which would fit into or upon the 4.1 tray....but yes, it will take a larger Battery.

With the low flying restrictions now removed, number 1 RAV is coming out this weekend and will relish its Battery up front to keep the front wheels on the ground on take-off !!!:yahoo: :yahoo: :yahoo:

a standard size Battery is what is fitted to most vehicles being 9 inch long/6 inch wide (approx measurements), being an ex RAC patrol man you will be amazed at what can fit into the small gap behind the N/S/F suspension turret.
