Engine Oil Drains Completely

All :

I own an Avensis -2005,1.8L VVTi,Automatic model.Well maintained;Lady driven-excellent driver.

Oflate,I have been having problems with the engine.I can distinctly hear a rattling noise at cruising speed. The sump is competely dry every 2-3 months.Everytime I am forced to top up by atleast 2-3 litres. There is no sign of the oil leaking. My driveway is dry as a desert.

My mechanic inspected the car/engine.Has recommended a nee/reconditioned engine. He said that would be cheaper than fixing the one I have.

Has anyone come across such a problem?

Please help

Hi,

That sounds a bit scary - you have and oil problem but are only checking and topping up the oil level every 2-3 months ..?

You should be checking the dip stick every week and /or 500 miles.

You do not say what mileage you are covering in that time, but I assume its on the low side.

If the sump was "bone dry" I think the engine would have seized by now, although it sounds like irrepairable damage may have been done by now.

As you clearly have little knowlege of the cars mechanics I would strongly suggest you take it to at least one other garage, specifically a genuine Toyota dealer, to get a second opinion as there other things that can cause similar engine rattles.

There are also known oil burning problems on certain engines which may mean Toyota might pay all or part of the cost of repair - search this forum for more details. If your car has been serviced by Toyota then you should have a good case.

hi lig,

what came first, engine noises or loss of oil.

the oil loss wasa problem in earlier engines due to a design fault with pistons and rings.

if you have had your car seviced at a toyota dealership through out its life and it has done less than 100,000. miles you can have it fixed free of charge.

as your car is not a diesel look in the end of ( or better still stick your fingure up )the exhaust pipe.

if its just a bit sooty then your not burning much oil,and your loosing oil through leaks.but if its a gooly mess

then your burning it.

either way it sounds like you have a damaged engine that will only get worse and more expensive if you keep using

it.

1.8’s have a history of using oil.

If the engine is rattling then I’m afraid the damage is done.

You should check your oil every week or at least at every re-fuelling.

Thanks to all the posts.

The oil went dry first and then the engine noise. No soot in the exhaust. So, I am sure after reading your posts that the engine is gone.By the way,it's a petrol engine.

Oil check was not so frequent,as suggested by you. Also, was serviced in a friend's garage all along and not with Toyota authorized.

Thanks once again

lig,

got the same problem. almost 2 litres of oil for 400 miles. told the same by toyota dealer - change the engine. they were not even interested to check the engine - sounded like a very known problem. Unfortunately no toyota service prior to me buying the car - not good then. What did you do?
