1.8Vvti Engine Throttle Control Problems?

1.8 VVti engine runs rough when cold and in slow moving traffic.

The engine is of very low mileage and has had this problem for some time.

The recent hot weather hasn't made much difference compared with last winter.

I wouldn't be aware of the problem if it wasn't for the queuing traffic outside by drive!

Is this typical of the 1.8 engine during its warm up period?

No faults have been reported by the OBD diagnostics.

Other than that the engine is doing fine acheiving 40+ mpg, mostly on the nearby A14.

This car / engine is not one of those named in a recent manufacturer's recall.

When I first purchased my 1.8 VVTi, I thought that there was something wrong because it reved at 1,800 rpm when cold, making it a pig in traffic because it fights the brakes, slowing reducing to normal 800rpm idle when warm, is yours the same? apparently various replies on this forum told me this is normal, which is correct. Toyota must have a reason for doing this, It never runs slow enough when cold to determine if it is running rough.

Hi - I too have a 1.8vti with exactly the same problem from new. 1800 rpm off the drive every day, waking the neighbours then having to hold it back using the brakes or slipping the clutch at every junction for the first mile or so. I'm told the reason for this is to get the engine up to temperature ASAP for emissions reasons. I find that difficult to believe. Added to that, in cold weather, while the engine is still cold, the car lurches badly if I need to put my foot down to accelerate into moving traffic. A most annoying feature for a modern day car with full electronic engine management. The dealer has checked both these problems under warranty, reporting that the idle speed is "standard". They they did change a sensor to help alleviate the lurching issue. (won't be sure if that really solved the problem until cold weather returns). I'd welcome someone from Toyota to provide a sensible reason for the idle issue. The car has also developed a noisy exhaust or CAT, which the dealer didn't cure at the first attempt but will hopefully at the next. These issues, combined with a very embarrasing lack of traction on the smallest hills during the snow, leave me dissapointed in my purchase so far. I'm quite surprised.
