Rain Water Getting In!

whiplash

Hi folks, hope you can help as I have a probelm with my Avensis T3-X.

I have water getting into the fan box located behind the glove box. The water then leaks out and collects in the tray underneath the fan box and then runs out on the floor when we go round a corner. You can also hear the water inside the fan box !!

Can you tell me where the drain holes and channels are located as I think they may be blocked and causing the problem.

Also, any idea how the rain water is getting into the fan box?? Surley it must be through the air intake??

Any help would be great as i`m getting worried now as the electrics are starting to get wet !!!

Thanks

Alan

Are you sure its not your coolant ? I had this problem some years ago on a ford escort, but noticed the vents had drip holes in it and any water was getting away it h ad to be another cause and checked the coolant level, it was leaking at the matix and of course was filling the tray up spilling out on the passenger side carpet, a quick fix as to get a small pipe and take the flow return pipes off in the bulk head and bypass the matrix for a small time untill i could work on the matrix from inside the car "pig of a job" i not saying this is your problem more of a suggestion as to what it could/might be.

Good luck.

hi whip lash,

it could be a coolant leak.

what you could try if its only a small leak is bubikal (sometimes refered to as a dog !Removed! cos it looks like one)

it will mix with any type of antifreeze and do no harm to your engine.

vauxhall use to in the official works manuels advise adding to a coolant system after a engine rebuild and was added in new cars cooling systems.it can be purchased at most motor shops and Halfords will stock it.

one problem is you cant just stick it in your coolant reservoir it will take for ever to get into the system.

youll have to drain some coolant off enough to remove the top hose and stick the in the hose or radiator.

this may this maybe seem a hassle but easier than stripping other equipnent out.

i repeat its perfectly safe to use and has been used in motor trade for donkeys years. the name is bubikal for some reason the system will not print this only gives me bubikal. repeat its called BubikAL sorry but the system wil not print the correct name each time i try to edit.ask a coolant sealant thats name begins with bar and ends in seal.

can anyone explain why system will not print the correct spelling i am pulling out what little hair i have.

Thanks for the replys.

It is not coolant,it`s rain water. It only happens after heavy rain.

Just had a look and took the trim off at the bottom of the windscreen. Poured a couple of watering cans of water over the screen and it all runs away fine.

No water seem to be coming into the fan box from the air intake below the windscreen so it must be getting in there from somewhere else.

Any ideas??

your right alan, but every time i tried to put the correct name in it kept coming up miss spelt,so tried to correct it

by editing it would do it again the only way i could get anyway near was to slit the name.

i am going to try one more here goes bubikal. you see its done it again why why why

could anyone explain why this happens.never had anything happen like this before.

a little advice would be handy please.

I dont know your model avensis you have but,

Possible causes could be..... sunroof drain tubes blocked, aerial base leaking, leaking windscreen seal, bulkhead wiring loom grommets, front scuttle drains blocked.

I would suggest sitting / lying in the passenger foot well, and get someone else outside, to hose the car down around the roof, windscreen, passenger door, bonnet areas, and look / listen for the signs of dripping water.

Does the water ingress happen when parked or when driving or both ?

Water leaks can sometimes be a bit of a nightmare to find, but with a little persistence you can usually locate the cause.

Hope this helps

You are on the right track but you should have poured the water directly into the scuttle area. The drains have to be clear enough to move the water faster than you can pour it in if you get my drift. Also check the outlets. In my experience the most common cause of rain water flooding in via the heater is blocked scuttle drains. This applies to many cars and not just Toyotas. If you want to try prodding the outlets a length of curtain wire makes an excellent clearing rod.

Also if checking for water leaks using a hose or such always start from the bottom and work upwards.:)

Didn't know they had that problem on the avensis. I know it is common on vw passats and that all it is is the drains that block up and then the whole compartment where the fan is fills up until it flows into the car through fan housing and vents. So i'd say strip out what you can in that compartment to find drain. You could also try to see from underneath, as the drains normally have short rubber hose drains viewable from under the car and you could see if drain is clear. Don't get wet!

Many thanks for the help.

I`ll take another look at the scuttle and try to find the drain holes from underneath and check they are clear.

Thanks

Just been reading through this topic and am intrigued by this... barsleaks not spelling correctly. Or was it bubikal you were trying to spell? (Lol, there it goes, youre dead right it wont spell BubikAL)

Will try with a hyphon in there, bar-seal. Maybe the system thinks it's a swear word?

On the water subject, I too think it will be blocked scuttle drains, probably full of old leaves.

I had blocked scuttl drains on my 2002 Avensis. Small leaves block the rather small drains at the back corners of the scuttle. Clear them with wire and flush the whole area until water runs out from underneath the leading edge of the front door aperture at a fast trickle. It would be a good idea to obtain new plastic fasteners for the plastic scuttle panel before you start as the old ones invariably break as they are difficult to prise out. Also get some elastoplast as the edges are sharp!!

Does the car have A/C?

If so then the A/C when used will remove the damp from the air and drain it off via a small black tube under the carpet on the passenger side and through the floor (check this isnt blocked)

Also is it definatly rain water?

Mart.

I`m sure it`s rain water. I have a man looking at the car on saturday to see if he can find out where it`s coming from. I think he is going to take the fan box out and see if he can trace the water. He has blasted out the drain holes with a jet wash and they seem to be clear but he`s going to give it a good going over so fingers crossed.

I would have said this, having checked out the air con on my car before too and especially considering that he wouldn't possibly be able to tell the difference between rain water and the waste water from the A/C. Saying that though, would he really be using the A/C when it's raining? lol I doubt it!

Well it`s the wifes car and to be honest she has the a/c going pretty well most of the time while the weather has been warm.

I`ll get the condensation pipe checked out.

Thanks

Why not have the A/C on when its raining?????? You dont have to just have it on because its warm outside! lol

A/C is very good for demisting the windscreen as it removes the moisture from the air and clears the screen in no time.
