2001 Avensis Vvti Oil Consumption

I see the high oil consumption problem with the older avensis vvti is well known, and there are many discussions on getting repairs carried out under warranty. However, our 2001 1.8 vvti (which has started to show this problem in the last 18 months)is now outside any warranty period and I suspect repair will be expensive. Other than the obvious inconvenience and cost (and potential environmental issues) of having to top-up the oil every few months, is there any mechanical reason why I should not keep the car running like this for the foreseeable future (i.e. until we buy another car, which won't be a Toyota!)?

My Avensis has the same problem and has done 137k miles. I'm no mechanic, but from what I've heard and seen, I can't see why it should affect the car that badly.

To hell with the possible environmental effects. Look at all the people driving SUVs and 4x4s. Does an avensis with high oil consumption makes that much of a difference?

Keep the car and drive it into the ground IMO. Will probably get to 200k miles.

It's not like you have to top it up that much...
