Early Signs Of Clutch Failure?

Hi, I'm new here, so I'm sorry if this has been asked before. I'm not a technical person so bare with me.

I've recently noticed that my car Avensis 1.8 04 is revving slightly higher than before, even when the engine is warmed up. At 50mph in gear 5 U used to do 2000 revs, now it does 2200 revs, also the clutch is near the top, but not fully at the top.

The car has done 58000 miles.

Is this a sign of the clutch starting to go? Also, what other signs are there for it to go?

Thanks

Put it in 4th gear at very low speed so that it's cruising along just under or around 1000RPM, then try and pull away (on a flat road). Any clutch slipping usually shows up very quickly when you do that (watch for revs rising but speed not in sync).

If it's still pulling up hills from low gear okay, it's more than likely not advanced clutch wear. I have an 04 1.8 Avensis and it's always been terrible at hill climbing with hardly any torque so it's easy to tell when it gets worse!

By the way I'm far from a mechanical genius, this is all just stuff I've heard down the grapevine. There are almost certainly other ways to tell for sure.

The acid test (with engine running)is to put the car in to gear (leaving clutch pedal down), handbrake and footbrake on, then let clutch pedal up. Engine should stall and stop if clutch OK.

Just dont try this too many times!

As above but use top gear, and give it some gas handbrake hard on and let clutch gently up. If it sits there revving, clutch is goosed.
