Avensis Power Loss

Hi all,

I have seen several posts about Avensis power loss issues but I have yet to see a full resolution. I have a 2004 T3S D4D Diesel with 66 000 miles on the clock. The car was parked up for a week and since then it suffers from some sort or power loss problem. Basically I'm driving along in 5th gear at 60 mph and then I try to accelerate but the car just does nothing, in fact it slows down. I have found that by dropping down to 3rd gear straight away and pushing the accelerator to the floor results (after a few seconds) in a burst of acceleration and some black smoke and things are ok again for another while. I have suffered a loss of power in other gears also but it is always when I try to accelerate that I notice it.

- I checked the EGR valve and it was clean.

- I added fuel cleaner to the fuel tank when I last re-filled (about 2 weeks ago)

- I checked the air filer and it's clean

All above actions have made no difference.

Other notes; Car was always serviced regularly. Timing belt and water pump replaced. I've never had any other problems with this car.

I'm not sure what to do next, change fuel filter maybe (this was done less than 10 000 miles ago and I don't use Tesco Diesel) ?

Any advice/troubleshooting steps received greatfully. Maybe there are a few simple things I could check myself. I know that if I bring the car to Mr T it will cost a lot of money to resolve a problem like this!

Thanks,

Alan

Hi Alan

As you can understand a diesl is not a drinking water -- so my advice to you -- have filter changer correctly with air puching out from the system. If all aforesaid actions have really been taken then simply change filter. 10k miles are 16k kms - -it is time to change it !!! even you use a pure diesel.

Les us know the outcome on the high way.

Cheers/Igor

Hi!

Looks like the same problem I have. All filters changed, egr changed, replaced engine after a genuine timing belt broke down on 30 000 miles, new water pump, new clutch, new glow plugs, throttle body from the new ( second hand) engine as after my first visit to Mr T they said is the throttle body. Now on the second visit they said is the intake shutter as it keeps pointing at the same error P0488 and the car goes on limp mode when cold, sometimes even when it is worm after lowering gear or unsmooth acceleration. I am trying to find out about it as the Toyota spare parts do not know and do not recognaise a part called Intake shatter inspite I have been told that this is the problem in Toyota Jemca Croydon. I pressume it is a part of the Throttle body. You could have a look at EGR valve by Palmerino if you want.

Palmerino

Hi Igor,

Thanks for that. I will get the fuel filter changed. Now I have a more immediate problem - a dead Battery!. I'll try to get both jobs done next week if possible. I will reply once the work has been carried out.

Hi Cravensis,

Just curious, is your problem now solved??

I have the same car and exactly the same problem.

I have changed all filters (fuel and air), but the problem remains.

Reading out the computer does not give any clue of what is going on, it does not report any errors.

Regards,

Paul

Hi all,

A quick update; I bought a new Battery (car wouldn't start during the cold weather and Battery electrolyte was v low). I also changed the air filter. Since then (1 week ago) I have had no repeat of the power loss issue. I doubt this has anything to do with the Battery change but perhaps the new air filter has helped. I remain very sceptical though.... it's now a case of wait and see if it happens again.

In any case the car needs new front brake pads now so I will take it to a mechanic to get the job done. I will also ask him to change the oil, oil filter and fuel filter, i.e. perform a basic service.

One last thing; the car was slow to start this morning (outside temperature was 4 degrees C). It wasn't because of the battery (no problem with cranking), it was just slow to go from cranking to starting. Do I need new glow plugs ?

Thanks

have them four screw out and test. the resistance of fours must be equal.

The smoke under acceleration sounds very similar to my EGR valve failure. Slow starting could be any number of causes. Sounds to me like you have more than one fault here. I would recommend a specialist or main dealer diagnosis. DIY & standard garages are fine but have their limitations. Spend a little on an accurate diagnosis and you may save a fortune in the long run. There are some long threads on this site relating to DIY & back street diagnosis and they indicate some of the problems encountered.

Hi,

I can agree, that simptoms point to EGR valve failure, but how did you managed this issue? Just by cleaning or somethig else?

Cheers, Andrej

Hi all,

My lack of power issue has still not returned. And just in case you don't remember, the only thing I did was to replace the Battery (which was in very bad condition). So could a very bad Battery really cause such a power-loss issue?

I also replaced 1 glow plug (infinite resistance when measured with ohmmeter) and serviced the car. It starts without any issues now :-)

Thanks for your help and let me know your thoughts on how a bad Battery could be linked to power loss!

hi mate

in case a bad Battery is in question then be sure your alternator output is in limits otherwise it does not generate electricity or the charging relay is died and the only Battery works for all the consumers.
