run your nail over it, does your nail catch it?

the first picture i think will need some form of paint but the second picture looks like it will polish out, unless its the angle the photo was taken doesnt accurately show the depth of scratch? either way i think £100-120 seems reasonable for the amount of work the body shop will do.

Hi CorollaD4D and others...

Yup cheers for that...just got back from visiting another 4 local bodyshops...met some friendly people...anyway they all quoted between £80 to £120...apparently they have to paint the door with the scratch on but then also rub down and laquer the front door and the fuel cap section aswell so it all blends in...heartbreaking to think they have to play around with parts of my car that are totally fine!!! But i guess its got be done...the guy who said £80 initially quoted £100 but if i bought the paint myself he'll do it for £80 so i did...paint cost me £15 for 250 mls professionally mixed by Hex Holdings. The guy must be good as he was working on some fairly expensive cars i saw...an 09 Audi TT while i was there that was also vandalised!!!

Anyway i asked all these guys if i would get away with a professional "touch-up" but they all said it would stand out more...but the guy who quoted me £80 again said he could try for £20...said he'll mix the paint with laquer and hardener...touch it up with a thin paintbrush...and polish it in...

And so im a little confued as to what to do...What do you guys think??? Respray or touch up???

It is a tough choice as if you are not happy with the £20.00 job if you are like me you would then go and have it done again but the right way.

This said it is probably best to get it done first as last, it is the best way to go.

Do it once

had a local man fix a scratch collected in car park didnt touch outside area of damage, got perfect match.had a computer/mixer on his van.its was more like air bruhing.he also went around car looking for other chips/marks and touched them up for same price £85.

old boy next door (yes even older than me)has hit his fiat on his front wing 3 times against the garage door.each time the chipman has fixed it perfectly and not needed to spray any other part of the wing to get a blend in .

its just like new when done.

for the sake of £20 just try the touch up. if it fails and they paint it then you'll have to pay the £100 or whatever it is anyway. i had orignally suggested touch up and polish down a while back then the thread was new

Hi Sam

Try your local Toyota dealer if they have a specialist bodyshop like they do here in Doncaster! They offer a service called S.M.A.R.T (small to medium area repair technology)

I woke up one morning to find someone had reversed down the side of my car, there was a nasty scuff on one corner of the bumper which was deep in places and about 1 square foot in size. I got quotes from a few places and they all said either full bumper respray or half bumper respray at a average cost of around £250. I went to Toyota for a laugh and they quoted £160! I let them do it and they made a fantastic job of it, its the only time a Toyota dealer has impressed me!

Personally i think you should keep the car and have it proffesionally done.

Hey thanks for the advice Mr T Sport and CorollaD4D...really do appreciate it...The bodyshop guy who's doing the work asked me to ring him on Monday to book it in for next week hopefully as he's that busy...So gives me time to think my options over lol! What CorollaD4D says about trying the touch up does make sense...but then after asking around everyone claims you'll never get a perfect match using even the finest paintbrush with the closest of matching paints...They went on to say id rather leave it as it is as it would stand out a lot more after being touched up!!! Soooooooooo...what Mr T Sport says about having it sorted professionally one time also makes good sense...Roll on bedtime...sleep on it lol!

Sammy

p/s...next car has to be black...so much easier to hide things or match up etc...lol!

in my experience black is the hardest colour to match! with what i suggested i don't understand why it will standout. even if you used a really fat paintbrush instead of a fine one? the method i'm suggesting you polish the paint down so there is no issue with paint strokes visible and the paint match well that's just down to where you get the paint from or if you have it mixed.

my cars wing was replcaed and they mixed paint for the car and there's such a close match you literally cannot tell which side has been sprayed and this is me who firstly is heavily into detailing and secondly sees crashed and repaired cars for a living.

either way i hope it works out for you it has happened to me before i know that horrible feeling when you walk to your car and realise its been keyed.

Hello Gentleman

Just an update...Dropped ma Pride n Joy off at the bodyshop on Wednesday morning...I went for the touch up idea...blinked a few eye lids and the guy agreed to try it and if it doesnt work out he wouldnt charge me for trying if he has to spray it anyway...so i thought i've nothing to loose! Anyway he rang me this afternoon...said he's done it but you can still see the scratch...i ran down anyway to have a look and at first i thought GREAT! But when i looked at it under an led torch you could see it the same as before only a lot smoother obviously...it felt great to touch but still eye sore to look at! He confirmed again in all his experience he has never seen a paint that can be brushed on to a perfect match!!!Sooooooooo...i gave him the go ahead to spray it in the end...at £80 to spray...blow in...touch up 2 other scratches on the boot lid and one by the indicator...and to polish up my rear bumper as its lost its shine...i think its a fair deal...lets just hope n pray it works out that way and that he does a good job...fingers crossed everyone!!!He defo seems to know what he's doing and seems pretty good at his job...Told him to take as lonnnnnnng as he needs but to do a TOP JOB! Collecting her late tomorrow so will keep you all up to date!

Sammy

P/s Thanks again to all of you for your help n advice re this matter

if he is a qualified sprayer it should be a perfect match.stop worrying, anyway you cant see both sides of the car at the same time SAM.as in my earlier post the the man did a perfect job on 4 square are in the middle of a rear panel

impossible to see that anything had been done to the panel even though the whole panel had not been sprayed.

We've used Chips Away about four times over the years. The last time was in June when we had the rear bumper, resprayed due to other people in car parks catching the car. It is a metallic gunmetal colour and you cannot tell the difference.

So if your chap is good, it shouldn't be a problem.

My friend is a sprayer and does all sorts of stuff from basic SMART repairs to crash damage and full on custom artwork and seriously, the stuff he can do is crazy.

If the person that's doing your car is good then you won't even notice, it'll effectively be as new.

But im definitely feelin ya on the vandalism side of things. **** *****s, I'd love to get a knife and scratch their eyeballs out. About 5 years ago i bought an MG Sprite which was a total wreck body-wise (more rust than metal!) but the engine was sound. Did it up as a project and put in a crazy amount of time into it. I did all the pre-paint prep work and got my mate to spray it up and then flattened the paint down after with wet and dry and spent about 2 days polishing, she was a beauty to say the least. No more than 3 weeks after she was all done some bunch of low life pikey scum smashed the windows and put massive scratches and dents all over it whilst it was parked in the city one night. I was going totally ape **** when i saw the damage :censor:

Assuming he's good it should be indistinguishable from new :D

I had the door panel on my old Fiesta done (£60!! :yahoo: ) for some reason the top sills were slightly faded compared to lower down, but they blended it perfectly and it actually looked better than when I bought it!

Hi Guys

Ok...here goes...collected my baby after a lonnnnnnnng 3.5 day wait...truth is he did a respectable job on respraying the rear passenger door that had the deep sratch on...but admittedly it doesnt match dead on 100%...you can tell its like brand new! The guy recons it will blend in within a few weeks if the weather warms up...Anyway moving on...i had a light scratch going down near the drivers side front indicator and he did a good job blending it in...BUT i also had one on my boot lid which was hardly noticeable in the bottom right corner which he said would work on...and as soon as i got to the car i noticed a bigger blemish...like he'd rubbed down the touch up he did but didnt bother to polish it up...the clearcoats defo been taken off...i dont want to go back to him...i did ask but he said he can only sort it in 2 weeks as he's too busy...any ideas on how to bring it up shiny again...rubbing compound maybe??? Please pass me your suggestions guys. The final was result on their work is what i expected...for £80 i suppose i shouldnt have expected much hey! Takecare all.

If you get small repair work done or blow-ins it will always stand out as being newer but if you give the rest of the car a good cut and polish then it'll blend back in again and you'll have a nice shiny car too :)

I recommend G3 cutting compound and polish, it's brilliant stuff. If a little pricey.

Thanks Deepsky...appreciate the advice...worked on my car yesterday for a few hours...only i used Autoglym Super Resin polish thinking along the lines you are...but to be honest it didnt make a difference...i think the respray is just too out in terms of colour...But anyway just another update..

I was in the mood today so i rang the guy back and kinda gave him a piece of my mind...in re to the colour difference and a few runs inside the door handle area and also re what looks like dirt in the laquer at the bottom of the door + he took some paint off on my bootlid when trying to polish out a very minor scracth...I demanded he worked on it today but he agreed to work on it tomorrow...recons he can try and fade the paint by cutting it...and can also get rid of any runs and dirt etc...probably wasting my time but we'll see what he does...i really really trusted this guy...and he turned out to be a plonka! Fingers crossed again lads! lol...Takecare all.

if the runs were in the lacquer then it should be pretty easy to wet and dry them down, same for the dirt.

Thanks for that response...Took the car down yet again...he had a look at his handywork and agreed the colour is off and that he could have done a better job...AND so has agreed to respray it for me at no extra cost only this time using a paint from a supplier that guarantees a perfect match...he promised to get everything right this time...so watch this space...

Ah cool, nice that somebody has the balls to admit that they've cocked up.

Thing is even though a supplier can guarantee their paint to be a match against the original paint colour/code in the real world it's slightly different as some colours and paints age and fade (some more than others) meaning that it can be a proper hassle to get a right colour match again, although some centres use a computer to match the colour to your existing paint but even so it's often never quite perfect.

Not to say that this will be the case with your car, but matching paint colours against cars that are more than a few years old can be a tricky thing to do especially with some colours like silver especially when it's metallic.

But remember though, you know that you've had the work done so it will always be more obvious to you. Most people won't even be able to notice.

If you've taken good care of your car though, and it hasn't faded too much (which in this country shouldn't really happen that drastically) then you'll most likely get away with it providing the person doing your car knows his ***** from his elbow.

HI GUYS

Just an update to my nightmarish hell i've been through lol! My baby's finally been fixed...it took me 6 trips to this body repair guy...had my car for a total of 14days on & off...returning time after time for minor repairs to his work like polish burns, colour mismatches etc...atleast he was honest each time to admit he messed up each time! The guys a brilliant sprayer but just clumsy on minor detailing...they're just too busy with so many cars to spray its unbelievable! Anyway picked her up this week and she's close to perfect...well better than before because a lot of other minor scracthes/blemishes are all gone! So it was worth it in the end. Gave her a good wash n wax yesterday while the sun was out and she's looking good. Will post some pics up soon. Takecare all and THANK YOU for all your support throughout!

Sammy

P/s...Just a thought...do you guys think a car de-values because it has had paint repairs done on it? Its not as if it has any major body damage! agree that many wont even notice but you'd be suprised how many do lol!
