Engine Warning Lights On - Advice Needed

Having owned my 2005 Avensis and given in much TLC I had my first major issue. I've read through a few starting issues and nothing really seems similar to my issue. One topic does sound as though it could link in. http://www.toyotaownersclub.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=120314

The 2.2 litre D4D engine has been really good and so far I've cleared 9,000 miles in the last year and 1/2. The car only has 55k on the clock.

Anyway so far my issue has my local Toyota dealer scratching their heads too.

I'd welcome any advice on what my issue could be

Initially on Saturday I started the car and the Battery light was on (plus two other orange lights water and oil I think) Didn't think much of it as only went 4 miles. Switched of and parked up for 2 hours.

Now the problems start. When I went to start the car. Nothing. clicking. I knew this was the Battery and the warning light possibly meant the Battery wasn't charging. Oh well...now to get the car home. Got a jump start, car fired into life no problems. Car drove fine for about 1/2 mile with lights on. Still the same 3 warning lights on the dash. The I put the rear heated screen on. This then seems to suck all the juice from the battery and killed the car I lost power slightly. I turned the heater off and managed to get a further mile before the engine light came on and I lost power completly. It ticked over but would rev.

So recovery home and a call out of a mechanic. He was unable to fix. By now I had charged the battery. The Engine Unit is giving fuel inject P0200 warning. This has been cleared but still returns. The car however is failing to start. It will turn over and fire once then cut out. I managed to get about 5 seconds of run time once. Lots of white smoke from the rear though (possibly unburnt fuel?)

My car has been with Toyota for the day and they have no idea at the moment. They have one other fault code. But they are talking Engine Management Unit, loose cable, fuel filter...etc.

Initially I thought it could be an Alternator not charging. But why would the car develop a fault where I can't start the engine. If it was the alternator, surely with a full charge the engine would fire up.

Have I caused issues by disconnecting it to charge?

I'm looking for any pointers I can give my dealer. So far they decided that the fuel filter is not a Toyota make so have started to change this. The fuel filter was changed over 1 year ago.

Hi Mate

Before giving either advice we must be sure your alternator is in order + the Battery is being charged. All other steps are for nothing now. I can not catch whether or not you're the first or second owner? If the fist then I presume you have purchased it from the official dealership and now their quotes as not original fuel filter can not be considered as legal. Yes you're absolutely correct saying regarding to unburnt diesel -- this is the result of a signal lack on the both SCV. Now as was mentioned above you have to start with both alternator and Battery + come back with outcome of your investigations. By the way -- have you ever changed the Battery during 5 years??? It is good question. May be it asks that? Cheers/Igor

An update the garage has got the car running now. They changed the Engine Management Unit (is this called an ECU?). The car started and ran fine. Now does this prove I need a new ECU or can you reflash the old one?

Sadly the Battery light is still on so they also say I need a new Alternator.

Also I am the 2nd owner but was the one who fitted the fuel filter. (I put unleaded in a year ago and started the engine and was advised to change the fuel filter) Haveing run the car for a year with no issues after this mistake so I don't feel that filter caused my fault.

The fuel filter couldn't have caused the ECU to malfunction, the ECU sounds like a bit of bad luck, unless it had water ingress?

Finally my car is fixed.

The part changed was an EDU. This allowed the car to finally start and idle. But the Battery light stayed on so they changed the alternator too. Finally fixing all issues.

And the bill....it bought tears to my eyes and well it makes me think twice about buying a Toyota next time.

Nice to know you got it sorted, would you mind saying just how much they stung you for, first parts cost then labour, no worries if you don't want to say.
