Problem Changing Rear Discs

Having actually getting round to changing the discs on the rolla I've hit the mother of all problems.

1st disc was fine N/S/R done in around 30 minutes including sorting the handbrake adjustment out.

2nd disc O/S/R after 2 hours I need help. Got the caliper off no problems, got the first bolt out of the caliper carrage came to the 2nd bolt and no joy, this is the one on the right hand side. Ended up rounding the bolt, hence the problem and this is where I need the advice. What is the easiest and most effective way to remove this bolt?

Thanks in advance for assistance.

Cheers

If the bolt is completely rounded then you may not have any choice but to use an extractor and buy a replacement bolt. However if you can get any purchase on it I would try applying some heat and then(if clearance will allow) try a ratchet stillsen on it. If clearance will not allow you can sometimes get away with using the heat and knocking a slightly small socket onto the bolt head.

Hope this helps.

It's not totally rounded but the 14mm slips on it. 13mm is too small and there is not enough space to knock it on due to the spring being in the way. I am looking at the extractors but not sure which type to get or whether to get the local garage to sort it? Looking at it it may be possible to remove the hub, 4 bolts I hope but not sure about the ABS sensor.

If you have any doubts I would always recommend a trip to the garage.

Similar set to what i have, they have got me out of sticky situations, buy a small blowtorch to get some heat into it aswell.

You most likely will need the blowtorch again in the future.

Something like this: Blowtorch

just weld on another bolt to the head of the original bolt and try not to round that new bolt off!

Irwin extractors are good so are dormer ones I have a set of dormer imperial extractors and easy outs of my job and they are amazing! If the extractor doesn't work drill a hole in the head and use an easy out. Use heat like a few people have said if you can get hold of some there is some Penetraiting fluid called mouse milk and it's great stuff and helps loosen tight or stubon bolts and nuts even if it has a stupid name lol

Just out of interest what type of sockets have you been using? Hex-Head or Multi-Hex?

I only ask because Multi-Hexes like to slip easily thus doming older or slightly rusty bolts when a standard Hex-Head wouldn't.

It may have just been the bolts time, but it's a useful tip worth bearing in mind when working on the parts that are more exposed to road grime and wear.

Heating is deinately the way forward, bit different but I had a rusty old bold on my lawn mower blade which I spent ages trying to yank off which lead to it rounding off, got a butane heat gun on it for a few mins, hit it with a hammer and hey presto mr bolt came off

  • 2 weeks later...

Here's an update,

I got the bolt grips and plucked up the courage to have a go today when I got in from work. No more than 30 seconds later the said bold was in my had. Great stuff. All disks are now changed.

KP, it was multi-hex head. I am going to get a hex head set for the future.

Thanks for all the input.
