Short Throw Shifters

This might sound stupid but can't you just cut down the original shifter and cut a new thread for the gear knob?

Looked at the one for sale in the for sale forum and the lower half of the rod looks identical to the standard shifter but the top looks shorter

Just an off the wall idea

If your confident give it a go.

I'm confident in the machining of the metal rod on the shifter but don't want to do it if it makes the gear changes impossiable or harder to shift too much.

What do you recon?

If it gets harder just buy a weighted gear knob, mate made his pug 206 a short shift this way and found it really stiff, put a weighted gear knob on it and now it feels pretty nice.

Whats a weighted gear knob?

its exactly what it says on the tin lol a gear knob thats weighted, makes the change easier if you have a short shifter

cutting it down will work btw its all about the fulcrum/pivot points or length, if you shorten the shaft it reduces the throw as there is less to move

ive seen this done, your reducing the shift but also reducing the leverage. but with a propper short shifter the pivot point is further up the shaft so you have the same or more leverage aswell as the reduced shift. just do it anyway mate, if you dont like it then it gives you an excuse to get a propper short shifter! :)

True, it will do until i have funds for a short shifter. (Im changing jobs so no car mods that cost money lol.)

The idea of the short shift is that you decrease the length from the ball up, but you increase the length from the ball down.

In other words, with a shorter (and quicker) movement/shift from the ball up, you get a longer movement from the ball down.

If you just decrease the length of the lever from the ball up, you will just make it more difficult to shift, without reducing the shifting time.

PS: When I say "ball" I mean the metal sphere in the center of the lever.

That makes sence but from the pics of the twm and the standard shifter there isn't much difference in length from the ball down.

Think the pic is on the for sale section

Might not be to scale.

The lower part on the TRD is shorter.

Spot on did you cut a new thread on it?

Not too stiff on shifting?

Has it made a decent difference on shifts?

Nah not cut a new thread yet, not at work till wednesday.

Shifting is spot on, so precise so much less travel. Should hve done it ages ago

Nah still got a gear knob. Finished product.

I wrapped tape round the shaft and pressed the gear knob on, it will hold until i cut the threads on to the gear stick.
