Corolla Brakes

Hi, was thinking of new discs and pads all round for my Corolla 2003 1.6 auto 80K miles (uk)found these Mtec discs:

http://www.mtecbrakes.co.uk/index.php?main_page=advanced_search_result&zenid=&drop_1=TOYOTA&drop_2=Corolla+Mk+IX+Hatchback&drop_3=1.6i+VVT-i+1598cc+%28E12%29+%28ZZE121%29+Year%3A+02-&keyword=TOYOTA+Corolla+Mk+IX+Hatchback+1.6i+VVT-i+1598cc+%28E12%29+%28ZZE121%29+Year%3A+02-&submit=Search

can anyone:

1) recommended pads? and how much?

2) How much I should pay to get discs and pads done? - was thinking 2 hours * £30 per hour = £60 notes

3) any ideas who could do it near Middlesbrough?

Was thinking of doing myself but work away so time is a problem (err.. and skills) so would prefer to get done for me!

thanks for any advice!

Pete

Hi OP I have just had my fronts done using mtec discs and mintex pads and so far so good there are deals on evilbay that supply the whole lot for under £180 which are drilled and grooved for the T sport but I am sure they will have similar for other variants of the car.

If you go to an independant garage most will charge around £40 an hour (thats round here anyway) and a competent mechanic should do the job in 2 hours, I don't know anyone in Middlesbrough so can't help on that one

I would definitely recommend ferodo over mintex. i have ferodo up front and mintex in the rear personally i feel since mintex was taken over and production shifted to china the quality has dropped a fair bit, previously mintex was my blind choice for brake components without hesitation.

however either of the two will give you better braking performance coupled with the mtec discs when compared to any oem replacement parts. it is worthwhile upgrading brake fluid to a higher DOT grade if you have a t-sport and will be driving it enthusiastically...

I think thats my next job just weighing up if its worth going for braded hoses too

i don't have them myself however having read posts from the people that do and knowing the theory behind them I would say it is a worthwhile upgrade to do along with the brake fluid change because you will have to bleed the system and it's easier to just do it once.

Agreed that is my line of thinking too  will just have to save some extra pennies

+1 for ferodo.

+0 for anything with holes in it. its a bad idea. I went round the ring last year and the solid but vented discs were fine. The drilled variety didn't last the A46 through rural Lincolnshire.

Did mine last weekend on the front with the mtec and mintex and so far so good

Also the drilled and grooved discs look 10X better.

just a thought for all those running Mtec Discs.

Have you checked the inside of your discs? this is the loaded side and if it is going to crack it will crack on this side first!

I've just changed my discs and pads on my Avensis T-180 estate from the :censor: Bosch ones to the MTEC Black drilled and groved using the Mintex pads. Look amazing and the car actually stops now where you want it to. I would have used Ferodo pads but they were twice the cost of the Mintex set. But I'll see how they wear and next time go for the Ferodo pads
