Loud Exhausts

Been chatting to my MOT tester today as I bumped into him in town.

We got talking about laws and such mainly about window tints but the subject of "loud exhausts" came up, and he was telling me that apparently you can fail an MOT for having a "loud exhaust"

according to him he says that "the silencer must be effective at reducing the noise to a level that seems acceptable for that particular vehicle."

he went on to tell me about a 1.2l corsa that he failed for having an "excessively loud cat-back system" and how the police do have powers to issue you with a ticket!

my question to you guys is:

have any of you had any trouble at MOT or by the police for your exhausts?

he is spot on i think the legal limit is around 80db but if it was failed on it you could argue the toss because unless it was obvious it would have to be tested using a db meter

ive been pulled over in my first zs apparently because of the noise but i think it was more of an excuse

most tracks have a limit of 105 db

yeah I don't doubt him tbh, he's a top notch MOT'er been in the game for 20+ years! and he's well clued up on the law.

I was just shocked really, and a bit worried, but I don't think my backbox is over 80db as my sub is 95db and that drownsssss out the backbox.

I was also interested to see what trouble people have had with 'em.

what happened with the zs then mate? you have to get a new exhaust?

i really wouldn't worry mate unless you go through a quite village at full chat at 3am in the morning no one will pay a blind bit of notice, im pretty sure its actually illegal to modify a cars exhaust to alter gass flow or noise from standard lol but nobody cares

heres the mot rules

My link

and its regulation 54 of the Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986

Every exhaust system and silencer shall be maintained in good and efficient working order and shall not after the date of manufacture be altered so as to increase the noise made by the escape of exhaust gases.

nothing happened with the fez as they had no way of accurately measuring the noise, was loud though lol

put it this way the maximum recommended exposure without ear defense at 80db is twenty minutes before hearing damage happens :yahoo:

My SR has an oem TTE twin outlet back box, I was thinking of changing it for a custom stainless with a more nomral Japanese style tip. I do find the TTE one very quiet :!Removed!:

I am not surprosed you can't hear

No blinking wonder you can't hear your exhaust over your sub - 95Db can be around 15 times more loud than 80Db. The Db scale is a logarithmic scale not linear.

Being exposed to loud noise can induce hearing loss which is irreversible and is usually only noticed after around 10 years after exposure and also there are no hearings aids which can assist. In other words it's permanent.

I'm not saying I have my sub at 95, just saying that's what it can do :P

lol 95 db for a sub is quite, most 12 inch subs matched with a good amp will do 120 db all day long lol my mate had 8 10 inch subs and was pushing 150db, now thats loud :crybaby:

Oh that's different but it isn't a very good way of judging the exhaust noise level then.:)
