Synthectic Oils In D-4D

I changed engine oil to Mobil 1 ESP Formula 5W-30 in a 2004 Corolla T-Spirit D-4D (114 bhp) and glad to report that based on 3,000 miles, fuel consumption has improved by nearly 5 mpg.

The car is used for only 6 months and 4000 miles a year.

It is run for a minimum of 10 miles with a few 100+ mile trips.

I have heard that as long as car is not used for short trips with a cold engine, the oil and filter change intervals can be doubled.

Is this true?!

Possibly, but I wouldn't risk it; D4Ds have a chain-cam, no timing belt, and regular oil changes are *very* important to keep it in good health.

I use Mobil 1 ESP in my Avensis T-180. But wouldn't leave it in there for more than 8000 miles tbh. Like said the oil lubs the timing chains, so important to change the oil to stop any chain brakes. My Audi A6 3.2 had a chain failure and that cost £12776 to replace the engine...

the 114bhp 2.0d4d has a timing belt...the car is no rocketship but rather a solid reliable motor which is cheap to run and if looked after properly will outlive the lifetime of it's owner. personally i think there is no need putting fancy oils into the d4d, it's happy on normal semi synthetic toyota oil and filters...

as for service intervals i would use toyota genuine oil and filter and service at 7/8k miles or every year rather than putting fancy oil in and attempting to double the service interval

Thank you for your replies. Cam chain breaking is indeed an expensive disaster. Inference here of this happening is that if recommended oil change interval (albeit with standard oil) is exceeded, synthetic oils will also break down. If this is so, it is bad for rest of the engine also.

I had a VW camper van with a 1600cc turbo diesel engine. After 100,000 miles, short engine was replaced by First Sussex Trucks, a VW commercial dealer in Crawley. I had instructed them to change the timing belt. They invoiced me for it but they did not do it. 8,000 miles later, it broke. Had to replace the cylinder head as a result. Cost me over £4000 (10 years ago).

For D-4D Corolla, service schedule specify timing belt replacement at 60,000 miles. My car has done only 50,000 miles but it is over 7 years old now.

Should I replace the timing belt now, in case it is perishing due to age?!

I would have the belt changed just in case! But thats just me. Don't they usually have a stated milage and year change which ever is the soonest?

Just checked the 'Service and Warranty' booklet.

Under 'Additional Replacements' time period in years is given for air filter, fuel filter, brake fulid and engine coolant.

eg. Fuel Filter - D4D engines: Every 6 years / 40,000 miles.

But for timing belt it state 'Every 60,000 miles'.

But as you say, I will get the belt changed just in case.

Thanks

PS

also had a look at Mobil UK website. 18 different car engine oils listed there.

Latest are the 'Mobil 1 ESP 0W-40' and 'Mobil Super 3000 Formula G 5W-30' oils that are also 'dexos2 licensed' for GM vehicles.

Mind boggles!

Yer there are so many different oils out there on the market. But you wont go wrong with the Mobil 1 ESP 5w-30 as it meets the VW 507 00 spec as does Castrol EDGE. But only the ESP meets the C2 spec

I seem to remember my owners book telling me it was 60K or 6 years. Age never comes into it with me. My 53 114ps has done just shy of 127k so I've had the belt done twice now.

Touch wood the car is solid. Only issue I've ever had was the engine refusing to rev past 2k. It's happened to me three times in four years. the first time it happened randomly for a week. The other twice it happened on a single journey. Never really found the cause. First time I replaced the MAF and fuel filter. Now I just throw in a bottle forte and drive the b#ll%cks off it by staying in first and second longer than normal.

if it's been 7 years just get a timing belt kit and have it replaced. but i think the normal interval is 60,000 or 6 years which ever comes sooner
