D4D Losing And Gaining Power On Its Own

Hi All,

I have a 2002 2L D4D Corolla which lately i am having an issue with, It has about 130k miles on it which i do not consider that high and has always been serviced as it shoul be,

For the last few months the engine light lights up sometimes when you start the car and other times not. I had a mechanic have a look at it and the computer said there was a Fuel Pump Failure,

Now a while after the engine light started coming on I am getting the strangest problem, So strange that i brought my local Toyota Mechanic for a drive in it and he said he had never seen the likes of it before,

Basically i would be driving down the road no bother and next thing the engine would drop power and you would feel the car slowly fading, It still drives fine but its as if the Turbo turned off, This might happen for twenty seconds or twenty minutes and next thing you will get launched forward as if the turbo has kicked back in and it rockets along, Then it might die and then come back etc,

Often times i could drive for an hour and it would never happen, other times it happens after 5 mins,

It is happening more frequently as time goes on and is becoming very annoying at this stage,

The computer is just registering a fuel pump failure but the mechanic does not think that this is the issue but he is not sure either,

I do not want to spend a load of money trying to diagnose the problem as he said it could start becoming expensive,

Anyone ever hear of anything like this before???

I look forward to any advice,

Thanks,

Stephen

Thanks for the reply,

What is an SCV Kit??

If it is the pump i assume that is an expensive job? Does the whole pump need to be replaced or only the faulty part of it??

Thanks,

check that actuator of turbo's geometry is working free (i'm talking about mechanic actuator).

is it possible that geometry has some incrustation and it's not free to move as required from ecu by the scv.

have you ever clear your EGR valve?

I have a 2004 2.0 d4d and had similar symptoms. It was very intermittent and then then developed to become constant power loss. The power loss was happening around 1500 and 2300 rpm. Above 3200 rpm it was never a problem, however, changing the fuel filter has eradicated this problem. I used a genuine fuel filter from Mr. T with a cost, inc VAT, of £30. Hope this helps.
