Tyre Pressue On New Style Avensis Tourer

Well Hello there everybody....

I was having a read through the car manual - was bored at work :-) and came accross the topic of tyre pressures.

Now unless I have read it wrong it states that the front tyres should be at 45psi and the rear at 43psi, that sounds quite high... are you guys running at those pressures...

Tyres are 215/55/17s I believe....

Let us know please

regards

Rob

PS on another note... I still have not figured out how to disable the automatic door locking... thats following the instructions in the manual and the online ones to a T... perhaps the CVTbox is different?

Is this the T25 model? I run my 2007 estate on 36psi all round. It seems to be better on fuel economy that way. But 45psi does seem far to high to me.. You may start to get tyre wear in the centre at that pressure!

Are those tyre pressures for a diesel? your petrol even with CVT should be lighter and perhaps using lower pressures, those pressures are, iirc, the pressures on my door sticker and in the manual for my Diesel Saloon. Even then it seems high, erring on the side of MPG over grip. I run my Saloon on 38psi front and 36 psi rear and not noticed a major tail off in economy, but the ride and grip is better. Mine rides a bit harsher anyway because I have the toyota sport lowering springs on mine because it handled like a 3 legged cow in a sandpit. On that note will someone please make some uprated anti roll bars please :)

Mine is a 2 litre diesel tourer and those pressures are for high speed driving, put mine up to that for my recent trip to France and it was fine.

Normally I run at 40psi front and 37psi back (as per recommendation on drivers door plate for 17 inch wheels.

Ha,

thats interesting...

On my door pillar it states that up to 160KPH which is about 100MPH you should have the fronts at 35 the rears at 34 and above that it would be 41 front and 40 rear....

Might try the combination of 40 front and 37 rear...

So why the difference in at these speeds? And what would the complications be if I were to go for the higher pressure at lower speeds?

Regards

Rob

Lower speeds, you may get slightly better fuel economy due to less rolling resistance but the trade off could be a harsher ride.

As for why higher pressures for faster speed's, it's partly to counter tyre deflection / deformation. You may find this an interesting read mate

I topped up recently, and door panel suggests it is 40 for fronts and 34 for rears.

Being slightly anal about Tyre Pressures as I am, IMHO it's a good idea to have a small digital tyre pressure guage from a reliable manufacturer, and check the pressures with that rather than with a forecourt hose.

I have a Snap-On guage and to highlight this to a mate with his Octavia vRS, we did the pressures on the local Shell airline, and checked it with my snap on guage and the tyres where 5psi over inflated. Just a thought, and you can pick a decent mini one up from Halfrauds for under a fiver these days.

Thats a good point. I always carry my Snap-on (Posh eh!) guage in my boot as I dont like to trust forecourt air lines to. I've had other digital guages in the past but I dont think you can beat Snap-on gear

:D Had my pressure gauge from 1960 with a screw out valve remover fitted in the end that pops out, its also in a wooden screw top case its a dunlop 6-50lbs still as bright and working as the day it was bought.

Always have it in my boot i too do not trust forecourts or even when my vehicle has had a punture repair or been in for a service, like to check it myself

When I picked mine up, brand spanking new, every Tyre a different pressure, I remember the front right being 47psi. When it goes in for it's next service, I will check them on the forecourt when I collect it and rip 'em a new one if the pressures are all over the place :)

well, the tyres state do not inflate over 40psi....

I've got a wee little plug into the cig lighter plug compressor, set the psi and off it goes...

set the fronts to 40 and the rears to 38... ride feels better than on the 35 front and 33 rears as per my previous setup...

will see what its like on the long route up to Arran next week :-)
