Hi everyone ,this is my first time on the forum and i was wondering if you could help! I own a rav2004 vvti 2.0. The car drives and idles fine but starts to pulse/ surge(its not a miss) between 2500 and 3500 revs under acceleration because of this i,ve changed-

Fuel pump

Fuel filter

Plugs

Maf

Removed throttle body, cleaned and checked

Engine diagnostics shows no codes and all sensors are fine, but did show up the 4 banks are running slightly lean ?(+1)

With it idling, lightly squirt some WD40 around all the vac pipes and inlet manifold STAY AWAY FROM THE EXHAUST. If it revs up, home in on where it does it and see what is leaking.

Those kind of revs are about where the VVT starts to kick in and just in case it is playing up, change the engine oil if it hasn't been done for a while.

Can you drive through it at higher revs?

hi anchorman,

thanks for the quick reply, i can drive through it at higher revs, there doesnt seem to be any air leeks around the pipes, but i will try the wd40 later today and will also try an oil change tomorrow.

is the vvt system that sensitive?

last oil change was 7000 miles ago, speedo reading 89000

thanks again,

Drewmyster.

No its normally pretty good unless the oil is really manky but its worth taking the obvious out of the equation. Was the MAF a new one or just changed it?

After that, there are a couple of Toyota Mechanics that might be able to help

See if the WD40 test shows up anything. Start right by the air filter (but not the intake!).
