Spare Wheel

Hello everybody. Not posted for a long time but study my daily email with great interest.

Just changing to an 07 1.8 VVTi T3X which has a space saver in the boot. Does anybody know if this is standard or has the dealer switched it? Would much prefer a standard wheel.

Many thanks if you can help.

Hi Terry

Depending on your driving, but personally I would get rid of it. A spare wheel slows you down, puts added strain on your motor, decreases fuel economy and decreases your handling and braking, and takes up valuable room inside your boot. It weighs about 15kg if you take into account your wheelbrace and jack which you also dont need. this is the equivalent to about 3 hp in your car.

The new tyres very seldomly get punctures (once in 5 years for me) and its easier to carry a can of tyre foam. This will easily see you to the nearest garage. The tyre foam may only be dodgy if you hit a curb very hard in the city and dent your rim badly. But if that happens you can phone a mate or the garage

Many thanks for your comments. Fully answers my question and will be able to talk to the salesman when I pick it up tomorrow with an easy mind. Not sure that discarding the spare altogether is a road I want to go down but an interesting idea if the space released is important.

Once again Many thanks.

i had a 06 1.8 t3x from new which had a full size spare in it. When i changed a year later to the 2.2 t3x it had a space saver so i think they changed them with the facelifted 07 model. Anything to save a couple of quid!!!

That is an unfortunate fact of life nowadays isn`t it. Thanks for the info.

Not so much cost saving, but the primary reason for the "space saver", is weight (= fuel- and emission-) saving.

The chances of a puncture are considered minimal with modern tyres, and you carry the 18 KG spare wheel the entire life of the car.

Leaving the spare out, saves ~1% of the total weight of the car. It's very difficult for a designer to save that kind percentage of weight elsewhere on a car without compromizing build quality.

The T27 Avensis doesn't have a spare wheel at all anymore.

I was under the impression that all T25's had space savers apart from the T-Spirit. Mine has a matching 17" alloy as a spare.
