Are you saying you've changed the dmf or you are considering doing it. There is some information in the pinned section regarding doing this job.

There should be about 12mm freeplay at the top of the pedal. If the clutch slave cylinder moves as you ease on the firm part of the stroke then there is probably little more you can do and for some reason the clutch isn't clearing.

4.2s have a notchy change anyway due to the cable arrangement.

I've change to DMF as it collapsed however that was with another DMF. It can be done DIY but takes a while and a lot of patience. My understanding is changing to a SMF can cause damage to the gearbox as it doesn't take out the shocks caused by the torque of the engine so won't be as smooth. This then travels through the boc and can can cause damage. I got my DMF off fleabay new at a fraction of the cost of main dealer prices. In fact I changed it and did a full service including the timing belt etc at about 70K for about £800.00 saved about £1500.00 if I remember rightly.

Hi

I changed to smf on my last rav and in my opinion it is not as smooth as the dmf.I now need to change the flywheel on my new car so i have opted for a LUK dmf from Dmfwith clutch to match which is now in my boot, just deciding whether to fit myself or get someone to do it as it is a 9 hour job.

It can be done and as you say you are looking at 9 hours but it may well save you a grand. Its much better with 2 so you might have to take somebody out for a meal! I think I posted some guidelines in the pinned section.

I have changed from a DMF to a SMF - £200 including clutch :yahoo: - and have noticed no change in smoothness at all. Go for it ;)
