Rav4 2001 Lost Presure

Hi everyone,

I am newbie to this forum, it was recommended to me by a friend.

Now, i have a problem with my lovely Rav4 51 reg Auto.

There is a ratling noise in the engine, it comes from inside the engine block, and i tried to get home to park the car, it lost pressure and could not even climb a small hill.

I am suspecting the piston is damaged and want to repair it. Though i am not too sure what the problem is or could be.

Does anyone have a similar experience and knows what might be the problem?

Can any one help me with the repair manual of a 2001 Rav4?

I doubt if your piston or engine is damaged

Are you sure its not something in your auto transmission?

Or a broken cambelt?

Cambelts raely break on these and it shouldnt cause damage

They don't ever break, its a chain!

Belt driven engines are usually wrecked if it breaks, it is an interferance engine.

i think its chain, when i put it on Drive on flat surface, it moves slowly but as i apply gas, the car losts presure and will not even move futher with the loud noise inside the engine.

It doesn't sound good. You should get a garage to look at it - there is very little can be done from here.

Ok, the garage said, i should be looking at about £2000 before they start working on it. I am good in DIY and i intend to strip the engine down, take my time and even if i do open up the engine, i will not spend up to that amount.

This is why i am asking for a repair manual for 2001 model if anyone can help me, at least that would be a starting point.

Please can any one help me...

You can find a very comprehensive genuine Toyota manual on this website. You need to register and then pay for an hour which will cost you about £3 on your credit card. All the files are pdf's so you can download them for your own use.

Loss of engine oil pressure will not cause the car to crawl along as you state. It may cause the engine to sieze or even break up but from what you say the engine is still going.

I strongly suspect you have a transmission problem and I suggest you investigate this apsect first. No pont in trailing the engine apart only to find you have problems elsewhere.

i just took out the torque converter out today....please how do i know if the converter is bad?.....i shake it and i could hear things moving inside, like something that is loose...is this a sign that it is bad?

It isn't easy to test like that. You need to take it to an auto gearbox specialist.

i have already taken it out, almost everybody i asked, said it was possible the torque converter was the problem. Do you mean i should take the torque converter to a specialist?..

does anyone know how to determine damaged torque converter...?

We've got 2 4.2 autos and I'd be highly delighted if I could check the tranny oil level as it doesn't have a dip-stick. There isn't even a mention of the auto trans oil (levels, changes, etc.)in the handbook or service schedule!!

i got a replacemenet torque converter, is there no way i can tell if a torque converter is bad or not?....when i shake both they all show sign of movement inside. another thing i noticed, i used a wrench to turn the crankshaft,it make a noice like something is loose inside. but the valves go up and down as well.

I am thinking of opening the oil sump to see if there is any metal particle in the oil sump.Probably this will indicate if all is well with mu crankshaft. the timing chain is still there and ok.

Jim, on my 2001 there is a dipstick with an orangey/red cap and with a clip over it,partly hidden by the flexible hose on the air intake.

It has to be for the trans fluid,any longer and it would check the oil in the rear diff.

Just mentioning this, but it could have changed on your 2002

Yes I know that proverb and it also applies at the other end of the spectrum.

I used to meet sometimes with a very learned academic who could blind you with science on more than a few subjects,but I had to change a fuse in a plug for him!

I think what Charlie is hinting at, in the nicest possible way, is that you are approaching your problem in a very "scattergun" fashion (engine pistons suspected/torque convertor suspected and removed, even bought another one/sump to be removed now....)

The original suggestion from Anchorman to seek help of a garage was well founded, where some diagnostics would have been gained, and pointed you in the direction of the actual problem.

Much as you must be admired for having a go, your car must now be unable to run with the amount of stripdown entered into, so diagnostics now out of question....?

Please take what I have said in the spirit it is meant, that is one of trying to help, but what you are attempting is definitely way above my head, and I wish you the absolute best with your problem(s).

There are parts that are free to rotate inside the torque converter. A new one will rattle. You can't test it by shaking it and you can only test it without installing it by having special test equipment.

Take care when removing the gearbox sump. Your eyes will bleed when you see the valve block - its very complicated.

I to admire Folk having a go . But its an old saying 'A little bit of knowledge is a dangerous thing' It means without knowing what You are doing could likely cost several times what it may have cost if left to Someone with a whole lot more of that fine and essential ingredient 'Knowledge'

As the Big Fella has [pointed out diagnostics are now almost impossible and You are left wondering what to dismantle next...
