Engine Management Lights - Any Ideas?

Morning all,

As per the title, my wife has attempted to drive to work this morning, got about 1 mile down the road and from what she has described the RAV has gone in to limp mode.

She nursed the car back home at about 10 mph and when I look at the dashboard I see the 3 following warnings rotating around in addition to the orange engine management light:

  1. Check VSC system
  2. Check 4x4 system
  3. Check engine system

The car is currently with Kingo & his merry men at Lindop's after the AA coming out initially to check the vehicle over.

The chap from the AA used an OBD reader and was getting a code that related to 'high rail fuel pressure' or some thing along those lines.

Is it likely to be my chip kit or possibly some thing else?

Cheers

Martin

Hey Blue,

Sorry to hear about the motor. I dont think it will be the chip kit as they are designed to opperate within Mr T's limits. But I guess that Kingo will be able to confirm that later when all the checks have been done. My 1st thought would be the EGR valve. Hope it gets sorted mate

If the weather had been any good last weekend I was planning on taking off the EGR valve to have a look at what state it's in.

Would a clogged EGR valve throw up these warnings as I was surprised to see reference to the VSC & 4x4 system?

Let Mr T have a look at it - you may well end up with a reworked engine if it has been using oil...............

Blue,

sorry to hear of your dilemma,if anyone can sort it,I`m sure Kingo can.Has it been using any oil lately?I had a full service done on mine in June, along with the mot.Did a 300 mile round trip yesterday, this afternoon decided to dip the oil, after reading this post.Thankfully, oil still showing on the full mark of the dipstick.Hope all goes well for you.

I check the oil fairly regularly and can't say that I have noticed any usage

I'm sure I've read somewhere that the VSC & 4+4 lights come on if the EGR valve is to blame. You nver know... You could end up getting a new engine in the end...

We are back in action - failed chip kit according to Lindop's.

From what I understand Kingo had a spare chip kit in stock so he was able to just hand over the goods and problem solved

Got to say again a massive thanks and 10/10 to Lindop's, they did advise me that they were fully booked and would take a look at our motor if they had time.

I didn't expect to get it back sorted in the same day and even delivered to my house!!

Fantastic service and a very happy customer!!

Further update - spoke with Kingo yesterday & he reckons that it was not the chip kit that failed but the engine had thrown up some kind of wobbler.

Anyway, drove it last night, still didn't seem right. Attemped to take to work this morning and it went in to limp mode about 500yds up the road from my house!!

Nursed it back home and took my car to work. Called the AA, they said leave it 30 mins or so and it will reset, so did this, the wife was able to drive it all of 2.5 miles and it went in to limp mode again about 0.5 miles from Lindops!!

Have phoned them and they are sending some one out to rescue my wife and our poorly T180.

One thing to add, when it went in to limp mode it sounded very rattly and almost as if it was starving itself from fuel.

Seems to drive perfectly without the chip, swapped it for another as everything comes back as normal without it fitted, very weird, gotta get the chip back to the factory for testing so will leave it to the technical squad

Kingo

Right, chip kit number 3 in place & all seems well.

Just to correct a mistake in my 1st post, the error code was low fuel pressure & not high as I had originally stated which would explain why I thought it was starving itself of fuel this morning.

Took the long way home to try & shake out any gremlins with a mix of a & b roads & no problems so far.

I will attempt to take it to work tomorrow & hopefully all will be well as the chip kit truely transforms the T180 when it works :-)

Thanks again to all at Lindops
