Coolant Loss........

Went under the bonnet of the car today and noticed that the coolant or expansion tank was nearly empty..... There has been no escape from the tube thingy on the top that looks like it should have a pipe on it and I cant see any leaks.. My Niece commented Yesterday that there was a pool of water under the car but I said I thought it was from having the Air con on for the drive from Burntisland over to Falkirk which is around 35 miles.....

The remaining inch or so of coolant visible is clean and is a pink colour. So is this normal ?? Should I have to top this up on a regular basis ?? Though this will be the first time !!

I have never on any of the other cars had to put more than say a cupfull into the tank before..

Those pipes were never fitted for some reason. Early models could lose water via the water pump but if its that bad it could well be the head gasket. As Kev says, it could well be the head gasket so you will soon be sorted by default

Mate what I'm wondering is where is the coolant going ?? If the head gasket has gone then would it pressurise the expansion tank and blow it out the top ?? or can it just disappear ? Just curious to know... I'm sure the pool of water under the car at My Nieces house was from the Air con. So where is this stuff going ??..

I've topped the tank up this morning and We are away up to Anstruther for the day and some Chippies for tea ... So I will let You know later if it drops again.... Thanks

Wee Charlie.

If the head gasket is gone (a known fault) it can get into the cylinders and be consumed during normal combustion.
