Another Ad Engine Replacement Tale

As the title states, been to see my local Mr T dealer following a series of well known problems(VSC lights, blocked EGR valve,heavy fuel consumption and heavy oil consumption, etc) and low and behold, the car is now awaiting approval from Toyota for a replacement engine. As has been said earlier, Toyota UK have now forgone the policy of fitting modified blocks, pistons etc and are supplying complete units for installation by the dealer. My car has a full service history but none from Toyota so the service manager has to seek approval from Toyota UK.

I had been scheduled an oil consumption check but apparently, the ECU showed a "historical" fault code which indicated an EGR fault (p0004?)and this was sufficient to cover the replacement unit.

The dealership where really helpful and have said that they only need the car for a day. Well practiced or what????

As my car has been diagnosed with a heavy diesel knock when cold starting, they are going to fit a new set of injectors as well so fingers crossed, all should work out well. I'm a bit dissapointed that it has come to this but at least Toyota appear to be standing over their product.

Emmissions control issues would seem to be an issue across a wide range of manufacturers, I was talking to a neighbour this evening who owns a 2006 Honda CRV 2.2 CDTI and apparently, he has had almost an identical set of woes with his car. Honda changed the injectors and a new EGR valve under an extended warranty and he has been told to put a fuel additive into his tank on a regular basis as well.

Has anyone on here been adding "redex" or similar or do you think it will be necessary with the new unit or of any benefit for that matter?

We run two VVT-i petrol RAV 4.2's and, rightly or wrongly, they get a shot of Redex probably every other fill-up, i.e when I'm filling up near home. I buy a box of it at Costco every couple of months. Don't know if it actually works but I guess I'm old school and reckon it won't do any harm. Hasn't so far anyway.....

Yet another thread on this subject. We must have 4 or 5 running now. Wouldn't it make sense to add to one of the existing ones?

I'd be using BG244 and Millers Diesel clean. And running it on Shell V-Power derv :thumbsup:

Hi Folks,

Just new to the forum and looking for some advice.

I have a 2006 (June) Rav 4 xt4 and have had it from new.

Never any real issues apart from front discs(who hasn,t) and always serviced at local Toyota dealer in Kilmarnock.

Recently started to sound more like a tractor especially when starting, fuel economy down a bit and feels lumpy between 1500-2000rpm.

I read some other posts and cleaned out EGR[which was well sooted up) and bought some BG244 and ran it through.

No real difference so phoned dealer and took it in.(having read other posts about engine replacements)

Workshop controller phoned to say that they had found fault on EGR and possibly injectors and having spoke to Toyota technical would replace and carry out software download! but it would be quite expensive ,I said that I wouldnt be paying anything as Toyota know about the faults on this engine (he had never heard of these problems or engine swaps)

Eventually I phoned Toyota myself(explained problem) as they didnt seem to have a clue or didnt want to and got a case ref and they said they would get in touch with dealer.

After more phone calls and no car for 5 days dealer has come back to say that Toyota will replace 4 injectors but not the EGR(they will clean it out, although i explained i had already done this) and I will have to pay the labour (discounted to £55/hr from £68/hr). Does this ring true with you guys.

Firstly I honestly think that any Toyota Dealer who claims to know nothing about the AD engine woes are pulling Your leg !! The Dealer who is replacing My engine on Wednesday had to order not only My engine but another AD engine for an Avensis on the very same day !!!

If Your problem is totally unrelated to the usual AD woes and the injectors have failed then as Your car is out of warranty then the cost falls to You... But why give the injectors but ask for the labour content from You ??..

Does Your car burn oil ? Is the EGR sooting up on a regular basis ??

I think You need to go to a different and more clued up Dealer ASAP !!!..............HTH

Sorry to hear about your woes but at the risk of speaking out of turn and running another post, It sounds like your car had the same injector fault as mine.

Does the car bring on any warning lights?

The best way to describe the sound that came from mine was a particularly heavy top end diesel knock on cold starting that you could hear from around 1800rpm to approximately 2300rpm. The knock lessened as the car warmed but never really went away entirely.

Just to update, I am collecting my car from my local Toyota dealer and in all honesty, they have been brilliant. Quick diagnosis of a well known fault, quick parts acquisition and got the car in almost straight away. Whilst carrying out the engine replacement, 2 injectors were found to be "out of spec" and all 4 have been replaced at the same time as the engine. They havent replaced the EGR valve as it is operating correctly . I am collecting the car tomorrow evening after work so fingers crossed, all will be well.

As Charlie Farlie says, Regarding any dealer who doesnt know about this problem, cant beleive that for a minute. When my car was diagnosed, they had another RAV in the workshop for the same treatment.

On another story, My mate is foreman in the local Lexus dealer and he tells me that they have had to repair every IS200d that they have sold over the last 3 years although they are still going the block and piston repair route. He also was able to say that they havent had any more problems after the modifications have been carried out. Good news.

Collected the car from the dealer tonight. Received a load of instructions about "running in" the new engine. Cant tow until at least 500 miles and not alowed to drive at a constant speed, excess speed etc for 600 miles but other than that, it seems very good and a nice tidy job.

I,ve been told to expect a questionnaire from Toyota about the service and tbh, as i,ve said before, cant fault the dealers service.
