D-4D Hot Starting Problems

Hello people :)

I'm looking for a bit of help/advice.

Basically we have a Mini R50 One 1.4 diesel with a bit of an issue. I understand that the car has the same engine as the Toyota Yaris 1.4 diesel and thought you Guys would be a good place to call for help.

When the engine is warmed up it doesn't want to start. It will crank and crank for several minutes before finally starting if we keep cranking it long enough. Almost to the point of the Battery going flat is how long it takes.

When the engine is cold it starts straight away. When warm it will start straight away if it's in gear and slightly down hill or if it's helped by pushing it.

A few weeks ago it broke down whilst doing around 50 or 60 mph and had to be towed home by the RAC. They suspected it was a fuel pressure issue P3002 error code was brought up. I done some research on this forum and the fuel filter was mentioned as a common complaint, so I changed it. That seemed to fix the issue for a couple of days but then it went back to not starting when hot again.

It's been into a couple of garages one of which suggested it was a high pressure problem and it would be advisable to replace the common rail unit together with the high pressure pump and pressure regulator. At a cost of £400 for this assembly second hand I wanted another opinion. So I have taken it else where and they have replaced the pump in the the fuel tank as it was the easiest first option as no one has been able to pin point the problem.

The new in tank pump hasn't fixed it and engine compression has been mentioned to me as another possible source of the problem.

The engine has covered 123000 miles with full service history.

I would like to hear other people opinions/experiences with this problem. We don't want to keep throwing money at random parts without knowing for sure what it is or could be.

The car will be undergoing a compression test soon.

Hmm... odd problem, normally it's the other way around!

May need to wait for the resident expert igor.

Checked the Battery?

It could be all sorts of things.. and as you see replacing parts is not cheap.

You really need a fault code reader and read the codes when it is hot and will not start.

It could be something silly like a sensor which is heat senstive.. and does not work when hot.. - that is what the symptons describe.

Sorry to be of little help.. but fault codes are easy to read and should pinpoint the problem..

A competent garage would do so.. run the car till hot and try to duplicate the fault..... You may be better going to a local diesel specialist...

Thanks for your replies :)

I have checked the Battery it is perfect.

I have had the garage check the fault codes when hot which comes up as p3002 low fuel pressure. It doesn't say what is causing the low fuel pressure though. All of the sensors are apparently working as they should be.

A diesel specialist may be an idea, I will probably look into that if the compression test reads ok.

Thanks for the help.

Has the fuel filter been changed recently?

Yes I changed it recently. It fixed the car for a couple of days and then the problem came back.

The fuel pressure sensor may be at fault... If it is it would explain the hot starting problem but OK when running cold...

You really need an expert with detailed knowledge to test each component ( the Toyota diagnostics alone are just a guide)...Toyota give various voltages etc in their detailed pay for tech details...

I am sorry but that's the extent of my limited knowledge.
